7 MPG, yeah baby!

That's the average I got on the track http://www.bragg-smith.com today for the first 3 sessions.

That all included a 4 mile trip from and then to the gas station!

Did I set a new record?:D

But, nonetheless, it was my MPG in the RX8

And... for reference the track was 2.2 miles and very technical, lots of throttle squeezing to WOT for a while. I used about 1/2 of a dipstick (about 1/2 qt) for every two track sessions of 25 mins in the advanced group (no rules on passing, just the way I like it!).

So 50 mins, about a 2:00 everytime (which rocks at this track!!!), 25 laps, or 55 miles of very hard driving I could never reproduce that on the street!

Also when the tank gets to about 1/4, on long left sweepers... very long... 15 seconds or so at 69-71 mph, I hit the fuel starvation again ... but once again, you will never be able to reproduce that on the street, unless you are very stupid to drive at 100% on the street.

The lowest mpg I got was 1.6 on a test drive.

I think that post is a joke! Sure could have topped the tank off, but that's just too little fuel to do a decent average!

I think you need to drive more than 50 miles or at least 1/2 tank. In my example, the same exact pump was used to initially fuel, and then to fuel again.

edit, and here's a big slow loading picture in the pit area. All the other cars were behind where I was standing:

hehe, it was a joke.

The lowest I actually got was 10.3 mpg.

One day I was bored, so I went to fill up at a gas station near my house. I put the nozzle in all the way, hooked it into position, and filled up until it stopped. Then I took it for a "economy-driving" test run.. Meaning I strictly abided to the shifting guidelines suggested in the RX-8 manual. I drove it around in 17 mile circuit around the area, back to to the same gas pump, where I filled it up again using the same method, and calculated the resulting mileage.. 10.3mpg

Of course 17 miles is not enough to get an accurate reading, so that should be taken into account.

The lowest mileage I got out of a full tank is 13.6 mpg (174 miles/12.8 gallon fill-up).

I am more curious about the handling of the car on a track than the mpg. Who cares about the mpg, we didnt buy these cars for that. I have tried to drive mine as hard as possible on the roads I feel I could do so safely, but would love a track experience. Did you experience any handling problems? DO tell!!

I guess SUV drivers can tell environmentalists that at least they're not driving an RX-8.

On my first track day I saw 7.8 MPG and that dropped to 7.0 MPG on the next two events. So I think were even. :p

Don't forget to watch the fuel gauge. I had problems with the engine starving for fuel in high G turns when the tank was below 1/3.

about 1/3 is where it hits, just a tad lower for me.... I thought I mentioned the starvation above.

I think that was my average at a track event at Sebring (3.7) mile course. Each 30min session sent me back to the gas station for about 10 gal. The car was fantastic on the track. It was real stable braking into and exiting the turns. I got a little brake fade so I backed off on the deep braking. For a stock car, I was impressed, as well as my borther-in-law, who was an extra 200lb in the right seat.

I would LOVE to do a track day, but haven't heard of any that are easily accesible here in Georgia. Does anyone know of one? Can you take any car? How much does it cost, etc? Thanks.
