Well, don't worry about anyone giving me ****; I don't even hear it. But I am fascinated about this extra gas tank possibility. The loss of the warranty, if true (and probably is) would probably stop me from doing it. I'll check it out with my dealer and I'll report back. Dan

Second Gas Tank - nope
Well, shoot .. that took about two seconds. My dealer told me that he has never heard of anyone putting a second gas tank into the 8 (doesn't mean it can't be done) and that if it was done, it would void the warranty immediately. I think that the warranty on the 8 is very important not to void. And I agree with those who say that Mazda should be investigating this variance in MPH experience. Dan

Sorry Rotary God but you have told me nothing I don't know or haven't tried already and still could get no higher then 13mpg at the best. The fact that you and many others can obtain this mileage is great I just wish my car could. You are making assumings which are based on your best guess as to why my mileage is poor and in this case your assumption is incorrect. Despite what you would like to believe I am fully capable of and have driven as you suggest with little to no improvement.
We appear to be barking up two different trees here. You are trying to tell me it is my driving style, which I have already ruled out through experimentation and I am trying to tell you that their is something wrong with my RX and other on this board that Mazda refuses to acknowledge.
I am hoping that this engine recall will allow an opportunity to correct my mileage problem. I am not doubting that the RX is capable of better mileage then I receive but as long as Mazda insists that 12mpg is normal I will warn other that they might get a bad one which dose get 12 mpg and no use of low rpms or soft peddle treatment will alter this. Since traffic was the worst I've ever seen or heard about anywhere, we took many small stop and go back roads. For several hours we were caught in barely moving traffic and at one point in the course of 3 hours we probably moved 3-4 miles. All of that time is a waste of gas and much of it was move a few feet at a time, stop, move a few feet, stop. That wastes gas. Sometimes we were in a line that was moving at 20 mph. This is a speed that gets terrible mileage. All of those little roads we were on required lots of acceleration and deceleration. We never turned the car off when sitting in traffic. When we filled up, I had still gotten over 20 mpg. 18 is SIMPLE!!!! It's about how you drive it. Learn to!
For daily driving, there is no point in revving the engine up over 3000 rpm before you shift. Even this is still faster in acceleration than my Honda and many small cars so don't think this is driving like a snail. It easily keeps up with traffic. By 35 mph when cruising around, I am usually already in 6th gear. Brillo always thinks it's weird and tends to look over at the rpm's just to be sure. We drive very differently and I don't get where I am going any slower. For freeway driving there is no point in anyone anywhere going over 70 mph. Your gas mileage will fall like a rock above this. When you decelerate, do it in gear. There is fuel cutoff during deceleration and this is free mileage. Try to drive as close to 55 as possible. This means driving slower on surface streets is less efficient. Just don't get carried away and do 55 in a 20. That wouldn't be good. I get around no slower than Brillo or anyone else on the road. I just know how to drive a rotary and get at least the mileage it is rated for. It's easy.
Some cars may have issues. If some have low compression, they probably do get worse mileage. These are the cars that need to be taken in to be checked by the current recall. If your engine is running fine and your mileage is low, it's not the car!

Yup .. it's the 4-door Coupe classification that I believe keeps the rates down. But sheeat; don't talk about this too loud. I'm still expecting the big INS companies to figure this one out and F us. Dan

Hmm.. I gotta find all my gas reciepts and redo my avg mpg. Last time I avgeraged it out for a months worth I got 13.4 mpg. Lowest was 10.3 highest was 13.9. Also my highest ever was 16.2mpg. Tried everything but 'eh.. I'm hoping the recall will fix this (I hope) or maybe its a bad cat I dunno again hopefully the recall with help me out.

For all the ranting and raving, I don't think the original point is without merit.........
It's all about perception (not about costs of buying another car, etc)
1) My last car was a Miata. I could rag that thing out to all extremes and it always, always registered 24 city/26 highway, always..........
2) Now in the 8, everytime I wanna have some fun, I unconciously do a mental calculation about how quickly I have to find a gas station as I watch the fuel guage plummet.
3) We all know maximum/any torgue is at or near redline; read #2
4) Although I was well aware of mpg before I bought this car, Mazda promised us a whole lot better in the beginning...
So, in speaking of terms of perspective, like the Mustang owner or the the Z drivers, while gas milage might be similar, we have to wring the hell out of the car to come close to matching their performance...............
I bought the car cause I love Mazda's knack for handling and all the little things the 8 has going for it. But make no mistake, the car is a gas demon in the same league as American built V-8s......................

I should let this tread die, but I just can't! As a new 8 owner, what I know is that an 8 is an 8. It is a rotary engine. It is unique. It is fun. It seems to make it's drivers have a **** eating grin.
Enjoy your cars, don't let the small things get to ya.....
(PS: 18-19 first tanks - 15 last one - car is broke in so I'm having fun!)

I for one don't want want a V8. I have to have the rotary. I'm not crazy about v8 power. Gas mileage isn't an issue with me. My rx8 gets decent gas mileage. I sympathize with those who do not. Hopefully the new recall will fix that. Mazda is backing it's product and is aware of the problem. They're finally doing something about it.

Here you go Mileage problem solved. This is the wonderful Ford Focus I have for the day while my 8 is in for the recall. Note the smooth lines, sporty exterior, fine dieing cat exhaust note.

Hay I had the Focus wagon, and it was a great car no complaints... it was just kinda old. No power windows and squeeking breaks made me trade it in instead of keeping it as a side car.

while one person may drool over a large V8 at the cost of gas efficiency, another might consider the cost of a unique, ungodly smooth rotary to be more important than MPG.
To some, that large, rumbling american-built V8 may not be their cup-o-joe...and if they don't want one, it's irrelvant as to how it's milage compares to a V8, relatively.
Ive got both right now (V8 and rotary), and although the 8 gets slightly under what the Cobra gets, I couldn't care less. The ride, feel, and overall appeal of the 8 still draws me its way more often than not.
