About mpg...
I got the silver 05 RX-8 just couple weeks ago and have 1,000 mile on it.
But my question is... how long do guys drive when you fill up the gas like full?
I drive only like...240~250 miles? When I checked fuel economy, it was 18/24,
which was same with my last car, 93' 300zx. But I could drive with 300zx like 300
miles when I fill up the gases. Both are 15 or 16 gallens I guess.
What is the reason? because my car is brand new?
Have to drive more to get used?
I want to know about mpg of yours rx-8.

Hello RX-8 TT and welcome to the forum, fuel economy is a subject that has been discussed in hundreds of threads since 2003. The search feature will return days worth of reading material on the subject. Since nothing much has changed on this car since it’s rollout you will find almost any question you might have will have a thread on it. But to get back to your post Mazda never claimed the RX-8 to get 18/24 that was the EPA and there are many other cars on the market that do not come near their EPA mileage. I drive mostly HWY and can go to around 270 miles before I need to gas up. The RX-8 have a 15.9-gallon fuel tank so the useable amount for most drivers is around 13. I get around 21 MPG but I only drive hard on the track. So depending on the roads you travel and your driving style you could get the same. Again the bottom line is this car does not get great gas mileage, it’s something we have to accept.

My typical tank mileage is about 200, with a 13.5 gallon fill.
In IL (as well as in Santa Monica, sunilseru), we are forced to use oxygenated gas for lower emissions - I think is SoCal they sell gas with MTBE in it ... here in Chicago the additive is Ethanol. Either way, the oxygenation additive cuts the energy content of the gas by about 10-12%, which costs you about 2 mpg hwy and 3-4 mpg city. I get about 15.5 city and about 21 highway, and if I drive an all-highway run with non-oxygenated gas (such as when I visit my mom and fill up out in Iowa and drive back), I get about 24 mpg, and close to 280 miles on a tankfull.
The warning light seems to come on when it will take about 12.5 gallons to fill the car. I "found the limit" the hard way on mine - I added 4 gallons to get restarted, and drove directly to a gas station where the car took an additional 10.4 gallons which means that it ran "dry" with nearly a gallon still in the tank!

When you think about it, that's the best way to see the effects of gas mileage - by measuring miles per gallons or gallonage per set distance. For example, in Europe, they measure fuel efficiency on Liters per 100 KM.
It's much easier to see the effects when it's amplified like that. For example, a guy driving an Escalade getting 12 mpg, isn't going to sweat much when his mileage drops to 10.5 mpg. But that vehicle has a 40 gallon tank - 40 * 12 mpg is 480 miles for that tank but 10.5 * 40 is only 420 miles - a 60 mile difference!

I haven't seen a complete fillup for months now. I get nervous everytime it hits 1/2, and I fill up immediately. Seems like every other day the stations around here are completely outta fuel. Hooyah, Hurricane Alley!!!

The reason, I asked it, is that there are big differences between rx8 owners.
Some people have 15/20 mile per gallen, or some people say they got
20/28 mile per gallen.
I know it depends on personal driving habit or driving on local or hwy.
Whenever I see the gas price, (the regular is $2,77 in my area)
I am afraid to go out with my baby.
Anyway, I was just curioused about it.

I get 15-16 in town and 21 is the best I've seen on the road. Had the recall done yesterday (fuel tank) and had my first re-flash. Got 22.5 DFW to Madill OK in 100F+ heat with the A/C running. HMMMMMMMMMMM?

Re: Gas mileage
Hello everyone, I bought a new 05 RX-8 6-speed in late June and I love the car.
I too was concerned about gas mileage. I've read posts where people were getting as low as 11-12 mpg. At my first fillup I got 18 mpg - mostly around-town driving. In fact, I have never gotten less than 18 - I'm neither a granny driver or a leadfoot, I'm somewhere in the vast middle ground I guess.
We took the car on it's first road trip right after Labor Day - around 550 miles. We averaged a consistent 23 mpg, I did use the cruise control (70-75 mph) much of the time since I live in Arizona & there is a lot of open country - and a sneaky Highway Patrol that would love to pull over a Velocity Red sports car. The stretch from Wickenburg AZ north to Interstate 40 is roughly 100 miles of 2-lane road, it was nearly empty, but in those 100 miles I saw SIX police cars and four of them had pulled someone over. Be careful in Arizona, the cops have no tolerance and often won't give you the benefit of getting off with just a warning.
From what I've read at posting boards, the lower gas mileage figures seem to be most common on 2003-2004 models - maybe Mazda made some modifications on the 2005s? I've talked to my dealer and they said once the car has around 5000 thousand miles on it, mileage should improve to 25 mpg or more - I'd be thrilled with that.

some guy posted a suggestion to try shifting in a 1-3-5 or 1-2-4-6 depending on if your going above 55mph--claimed that it increased his gas mileage by 2-3mpg. tried it over the last month and 4 fill-ups. his suggestion worked extremely well for me. went from 18-19mpg (all city driving) to 21-22mpg. sacrificed some of the zoom zoom, but still there if need be. just not racing every tom-dick-or harry who revs up next to me anymore. aloha!

Depending on the model year?
05 has better fuel economy than 04'? I do not think so.
I thought mine was 05, but it is 04' and has just 1,000 mile on it.
When I calculated my mpg, it was 18 / gallon. I fille up 14 gallons and
drive 260 miles.
Most of time, I drove highway.
I meant, every rx8 has same engine and same fuel tank.
It should have same mpg or it should have close mpg with others.
I know there could be difference depending on driver's habit.
But it should not that much. Some people got over 20 or 23 miles per gallon
and mine just got 18? I do not know how I could understnad
this problem. Because mine is brand new? As time goes by,
will the fuel economy be increased?
What should I do to increase my mpg?
How you guys drive to get high mpg like over 300 miles?
I usually shift between 3~4,000 rpm and most of time I use cruise control.

Well, EPA mpg numbers are not exactly , um, realistic. They basically drive like granny, b/c they don't even have to hit 60. Yup, 59.9 is the speed they are required to hit. No hard acceleration, heavy, late braking, noooo sir. Kinda like skewed 0-60 times and HP #'s. Also, I think rotaries use lots of gas idling. Speeds over 55-60 also lessen gas mileage. I'll be interested to see what #'s I get when I get my beauty.
