About to purchase RX8.

Hi,

I'm about to purchase an RX8. I have wanted one for ages and have been an avid fan of the RX7 for some time. I'm just after moving to the USA and finally the RX has become affordable(It is nearly 2.5 times the price back home). I'm looking to buy a '05 model. I have a question or two regarding the car though. I've read through the FAQs posted on this site but one or two questions remain. (or maybe they've been covered and missed them)

From what I can gather Recall #4206F did not effect all cars manufactured in this year. Is that correct?

Also as I am new to this country I am a little unfamiliar with the carfex reports. If there are no open recalls on the report does this mean that the recall has not been completed if it is not mentioned anywhere else in the report?

Would it be fool hardy to buy a car with an open recall? My own feelings are that if there is something wrong it will be fixed if there is an open recall. Or is it reasonable to demand that the dealer puts the car through the recall themselves?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

I presume you've found all the TSBs and recall notices at http://www.finishlineperformance.com/ . The recall notice gives the serial number range that it applies to.

I can't vouch for what Carfax does or does not cover. I do know that they can't catch everything. But any Mazda dealer would be able to look up the recall history of a car.

IMHO, the problem with an open recall is that the owner did not take care of it when they were notified. Leaves you wondering what else they didn't bother taking care of.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that by law the dealership must do recall work b4 reselling the car. If not - well the same thing applies - do you want to buy a car from a dealership that didn't bother doing the recall work while they had the car on lot? prlly not.

With carfax, the recall should be listed as open if it hasn't been done and also listed if it has been done as well. (This applies to private sellers as well.) For the overall carfax, the listing are only for reported issues - ie, if someone had an accident but never reported it to the insurance company and had it fixed on their own dime it will not show up on the report.

Welcome to the forum and good luck on the purchase.

Drive a few '05s and you'll get an idea of the common issues.
