AC constantly on affecting mileage?

I did a quick search but didn't easily come up with an answer or the following point.

I noticed that the AC is on when you have your vent settings to the windsheild or floor or any combination of the two. I'm kinda used to this as my Protege5 did this as well. So whenever I am street racing, driving though parking lots at high rates of speed and gunning for old women walking across streets I turn my vent settings to the face so I don't run the AC compressor and waste engine power.

Just wondering if everyone knew this because maybe this is affecting some of the members gas milage...

Have any of you disengaged this function? Is it a simple matter of destroying a micro switch in the HVAC unit?
