Unhappy accel/decel jolt

I've been having this problem for quite a bit now but this morning it was way too much for me to just not do anything about it. I called Mazda and I'll be dropping the car off on Monday.

Here is the problem:

What happens is when I'm driving the car in city or highway I get this sudden jolt whenever I take my foot off the gas or put my foot on the gas. Now, I know that people will say that i let off too fast or mash the gas pedal but that’s not the case. I'll try to be really smooth with the pedal and the car will still jolt as if there is a delayed response. This will also happen when I'm cruising 40 mph in 5th gear (low revs) and I just left off the gas slowly the car will jolt forward. Occasionally when I'm driving in stop and go traffic I will be in second gear going with the flow and the car will bounce back and forth. It feels like I’m mashing the pedal and letting off quickly when in reality my foot isn't moving at all.

The only thing that I can think of is having some sort of problem with the transmission. It feels like there is excessive "play" between the gears and whenever i accelerate the gears catch up to each other and smack together creating this jolt. I have no idea if what I'm saying is possible so don't hold this against me.

Anyone have any ideas? Could it be something to do with the ECU map or ignition? Motor mount possibly?

yeah it sounds like something with the transmission. If you have the car at low revs (being a manuel of course) it can definetly jolt back in forth a little when putting ur foot on or off the gas. Cause the engine isnt getting much fuel IDK prolly ur transmission

Have you had the recall done yet? For me, the new flash smoothed this out completely! Prior to the new flash, it seemed there was a very slight pause before throttle changes were communicated to the throttle body. That's all gone now and it is remarkably smoother!

That's what i'm afraid of. Any one have any idea of what could cause this? I'm just naming things: Clutch? Throwout bearing?

Actually it's been getting worse ever since i got the new flash last week....well only this morning has it been worse. When i first got the car back after the new flash i thought it felt smother but it could have been all in my head.

I have always had this problem and considered it to be a torque/transmission issue. After letting off the gas at an idle with the car in gear(lets say in 2nd gear) there is a lull and a jerk forward if I don't apply gas or depress the clutch.

I've also always had a "click" or sound of a cable/linkage going taught with the clutch very audible when depressing the clutch during a reverse or pulling into parking. I have mentioned it repeatedly to my dealer who has been unable to find a problem with the transmission. I don't worry about it too much as it is on record now with my service calls and if there's a probem in the future I will refer back to them.

I've had the same exact problem as you just mentioned with the clicking of the clutch pedal. My father had the same 'jolt' problem in other cars and so i wasn't too worried about it but now it's just too much and I need to get it checked out.

Don't know if the 8 has them or not, but it sounds like a universal joint going bad. How many miles?

in my case, Neither of those bulletins is applicable to the symptoms we've been discussing. Regardless, I did look into both and they were not found to be a culprit.

However the engine mount issue is probably the orig. poster's problem. I would advise brining it to your local dealer's attention. (I generally take a print out with me when I want them to do a TSB even though they should have it on hand)

I just hit 27,000 miles today.

I'll bring the engine mount TSB to the dealer on monday and let them know about it. Last time i went there with a TSB they said that it wasn't in their database and these things found online are made up......

Anyways, if anyone has any other suggestions please let me know. I really want to get to the bottom of this.

If you're seeing this in the lower gears, it sounds normal to me. The clutch needs to be slipped to keep it smooth down there. Any throttle change can make it jerky in 1st and 2nd gear. It was like this when my car was new, and even after I had motormounts replaced.

Edit: You're saying you get this in 5th, that's something I never see, so sounds abnormal afterall..

Right, it's in higher gears as well... even in 6th gear at 3500rpm it will have a slight jolt but not as drastic as in lets say 4th gear.
