accident

Ok well needless to say i am pissed at myself considering i have only had my 8 for like a month. Well last night hit some ice and lost control. I hit the curb going about 45mph and spun like 6 times and i dont have any SES lights or apparent engine problems. The rims have bad rash and when i drive the car just basically wobbles up and down and my gf who drove behind me said both the back wheels wobble from side to side. I hope its not the axel but im about to jack the car up and take a look at the rims and im hoping its just the rims but how do i go about diagnosing the damage?

Thanks

Do a careful visual inspection of all the suspension components while the rims are being replaced. If everything looks OK, do a test drive. If there's no vibrations and the car goes straight, you're probably OK.

If you're not comfortable with that, it would probably be a good idea to have an expert alignment shop check things over.

Another thing; the stock rims do not impress me as being particularly strong, so my guess would be that they took the beating and possibly saved the suspension.

I feel your pain, I had a similar thing a month after I got my 8, too. I slid on a wet road, went over the curb hard. I had to replace a tie rod and get an alignment. The rims were scuffed/gouged but not bent. Total cost, something like $650. But the car runs perfect again, solid. Good luck

Sorry to say but it sounds like you snapped at least 1 control arm. Did this in my Volvo, and I was going alot slower than you. Strangely though, the rim was still straight and fine after the incident

The wheels will probably be one of the last things to bend in this situation. Jack the car up, take one of the wheels in question off and roll it down a flat paved surface to see if it wobbles. Beyond that, a service center/tire shop can check the wheels for you and at the same time inspect the suspension components.

Same thing last year, was going slower than 45mph. Broke a control arm, two rims were scratched beyond repair and a motor mount needed to be replaced, along with some other things I don't remember... Airbags were also deployed (the side curtain one). Total cost around $5000, but it runs perfectly now.

Good luck.

ok just got back from firestone and well 3 of 4 rims were so bent the balancing machine did a emergency shut down lol. He said the axle looked fine and no control arms were bent however the alignment is off and the pass rear camber was like 2 degree's or something. He said there was no visible bends or breaks but normally if its off by that much its the strut. My plans are to get a new set of rims and redo the alignment and then if its still a problem i will replace the strut. So my next question is will these rims fit.

Bolt pattern : 5 x 114.3
Size : 18 x 8(front) & 18 x 9(rear)
Offset : 38mm(front) & 38mm(rear)
Lip size : 2.5" (front) & 3" (rear)
Finish : Gloss Black With Machined Polished lip

If they do fit the car will i need new tires too or will the stock 225/45's fit these?

You should be good with it, but you'll prolly need to stretch the backs to fit..

But if you're getting new rims/tires.. get 18X9.5 on 265s..

ok well i will be buying those rims with the description above but i want to make sure that my current tires will be able to fit on the rims. I know they should fit on the fronts but will 225's be able to fit onto the back 9" wide rim?

I think i will be going with the black on chrome look, i have always liked the black on silver cars so im just trying to stay positive about thrashing my baby

those rims will fit easy, i have 9.5 +35 with 265/35 and it fits perfect. like you cant even put a finger between the wheel and fender ( with eibach 1.2" drop)

I would say get a 245 tire on the back and in texas i would go with a nice T1r or falken 452 performance tire ( about 130-150 each)

BTW if you DO need any suspension stuff i have it. lmk

Ok well im trying to decide between these two, I like these wider ones but im worried that they wont fit especially with the 225's. Here are the pics and specs of each.

Finish: Gun Metal with Machine Lip
Size: 2 Front Rims are 18X8.5 about 2" Lip. 28.8 lbs ea.
Size: 2 Rear Rims are 18X9.5 about 3" Lip. 28.0 lbs ea.
Bolt Pattern: 5X4.5 (114.3) and 5X4.75
Offset: +35mm
Aluminum Center Caps Included

or

Bolt pattern : 5 x 114.3
Size : 18 x 8(front) & 18 x 9(rear)
Offset : 38mm(front) & 38mm(rear)
Lip size : 2.5" (front) & 3" (rear)
Finish : Gloss Black With Machined Polished lip

I would have to recommend stock wheels over those wheels listed.

No way to know for sure, of course, but I feel that the chance of you getting this assessed and repaired *properly* for ultimately less than 1000 dollars is unlikely. Also, you don't know what secondary issues it might causes down the road that could be expensive. Just my opinion, but if I were in your shoes, I would just file an insurance claim and have it repaired, and then just be on your way, confident that your car is working properly.

At 45 I know for a fact you did some damage to your suspension/axle. For me when I "kissed" a curb for the second time going around 4-5 mph I had to replace the Hub & Wheel Bearing assembly and the outer tie rod. I only had to do it for the front left, but it was a cheap fix. about $200 for the parts.

My guess is if you have a wobble its cuz your wheel & hub assembly and the tie rods are bent / broken / loose

Hope that helps. And I can also supply links where to buy all this stuff. If it's under $1500 for everything I would just buy the parts and either do it yourself or have a friend thats a mechanic help you.

I'm not surprised to hear this. As I mentioned earlier, the stock wheels on the RX8 just don't look that strong. This isn't entirely a bad thing. Having the wheels bend in the type accident you had probably saved most or all of your suspension components from damage. In a curb strike, if the wheels don't bend, something else will. Wheels are easy to replace.

first before you buy things... it would be smart to do an insurance claim because the stock wheels are priced at over 400 each from mazda, so if i you get the price for those on your settlement ( 1200 for three) you could sure easily pay for some new wheels with that, plus all the other shiat thats messed up, allignment, possible axle shaft... just an opinion.

look for pictures of 225 tires on 9" and 9.5" wheels. I don't like it, but it might be your cup of tea. Also, wheel weight is said to be very important on this car and those you picked out are heavy (22 lbs is stock).

List price from Mazda is $560 to $580. Together with mounting/balancing the tires and an alignment, the wheel damage alone will be close to $2000.
