Acura TL = Sports Car... rx-8 = not?

please have him explain how his luxury sedan is more of a sports car than our 8... ask him if they tested his four door family car on top gear... i have 100 dollars on what the answer will be... although his tl is a very nice car our 8 will out perform it anyday

Many people think low 1/4 miles times = Sports Car. A TL as many other cars, trucks, SUV's will beat an RX-8 at the drag strip. So that is where your buddies misconception can come from.

^^ He says we don't have enough HP to be a sports car...
After a while I got annoyed and just started repeating mid sized luxury sedan. I took a look at the TL forums and they all have terrible taste, chrome rims and bleh.

Tell him he needs to look up the definition of a true sports car and muscle car. What he has is a quasi luxury car that has some decent power (my dad has an 08 TL-S MT). Just ask if a true sports car has FWD.

So how does 232HP not make it a sports car? The two above that are more well known to be turbo are just that, turbo. Throw a turbo onto the RX-8 and you can make 300HP like those two.
What sort of car does your friend think of when he says "sports car"?

Far from it lol. Muscle car has tons of straight line power. And a lot of rustang owners will call people who own Japanese cars ricers because they are idiots who nut hug their car worse than we do. Leave nut huggers by themselves because they wont ever listen to reason, so don't waste your breath.

Well, does he have the SH-AWD 3.7-liter V6 with with 305 hp and 273 ft-lbs of torque?
He might have a slight point against the AT RX-8 with 212 hp and 159 ft-lbs of torque.
Neither car fits the traditional definition of a sports car so I can see where some people would prefer more power to fit their preference for a sporty car.

A sports car is a term used to describe a class of automobile, typically of two seats and two doors, with precise handling, brisk acceleration, sharp braking, and attractive aesthetics. A sports car makes trade offs in practical considerations such as passenger space, comfort, and cargo capacity in favor of those traits which enhance the joy of driving it.

/\ Pwned!
BTW the new TL is a piece of ****. C&D or Motortrend did a comparison with the Infiniti G35 sedan, BMW 328, and the Audi A4 and it was last place by far. Heck, 15.2 quarter MILE! WTF is wrong with them?

When I had my used 8 inspected at a Mazda dealer before purchase, the service manager typed the following onto my receipt/report:
"Mazda-certifed 4-door family sedan"
Didn't quite fool my wife or MIL but it was good for a good laugh.

I'm gunna have to disagree with you. It's actually a very refined car that is very nice to drive in. It has amazing features and technology which, for it's price, is unmatched. I really like the car besides the FWD thing.

I think the new C&D test mentioned here is on the NEW TL, the one with the shield grill. The incoming model is not as good of a car relative to the current competition. The outgoing TL was well loved by the magazine tests.
Transam kid, I believe the 08 TL-S (the one you mentioned your dad has) is the outgoing model that everyone liked?
This whole thing is probably the biggest non-discussion I've ever seen. It's all grey in the end. TLs are obviously not sports cars, it is a sporty luxury car. I would think in a pure definition, a RX-8s more of a sports car than an M5, yet the M5 would be faster in pretty much all cases. I would say an RX-7 is more of a sports car than an RX-8, although not much faster. It's all relative. The cars that suceed for the manufacturers have always been time and again daily usable sports cars.
