added 1/2 quart after 800 miles- bad?
I did a 500 mile roadtrip with the car (6 speed) the first weekend I got it, and had no dip in oil levels. the week and a half since then I have done 300 city miles, and the dipstick was halfway between F and L. I added almost a half a quart, and oil level went back up to close to full. City driving includes lots of stop and go, and some idleing. any thoughts if this is way out of line for oil usage?

it could also be a timing issue that is causing the car to burn more oil than necessary.. Definitely have your car checked out.
I've driven my car 1300 miles now and the oil use has been negligible.

emailists, I had the same issue as you. Did you see your oil light flash? Mine also was a 1/2 quart low.
Took mine to the dealer and they ordered a new oil pan and said they would upload some new software as well when installing the pan.

would this worry anyone enough to consider a buyback, and get another 8?
I am testing gas milage now with sunoco ultra 94 and milage seems like it will be pretty poor. I'll know in a few days.

I am really on the fence about the repurchase. My 8 is using a lot of oil and getting poor gas mileage. One day I want to send it back, the next day I want to keep it. Everything about the car is perfect except the inconsistencies in everyones oil use and gas mileage. I'm worried I'll be dumping bucks into this engine soon after the warranty is up. That shouldn't be an issue on a $33K automobile.

why is everyone so paranoid about this damned engine ????
i've said it a million times and i'll say it again...... rotaries are perfectly reliable (as long as you check fluids regularly and aggressively maintain them). What you CANNOT do is treat it like a Honda Civic and expect it to go for 10,000 miles being low on oil. Rotaries with TURBOS have problems.
it's fine.... it was NEVER expected to get good gas mileage and it WAS expected to use oil
drive it, love it, DEAL WITH IT
also, using Sunoco Ultra 94 is pointless.... you're not going to get any better mileage with it. The mileage has to do with everyone's driving habits...... plain and simple.

I have no problem adding oil- I knew before buying thanks to this forum. I just want to be sure my particular engine is within spec of what oil usage/milage should be.
Regarding Sonoco Ultra - I did a an Ultra 94 VS. another premium gas with my Probe GT 94 on the same trip and got a few miles per gallon better with the Ultra 94. I have heard it said that when tested it was the only gas that actually had more energy than any other brand.

Everyone complains and says rotories use oil. Most GM V8's use like 2 qts in 3000 miles. At least my 8.1 liter does. Dealer says it's Normal. It even comes with a low oil light when you are 2 qts low.
