adding oil & oil change

hi, i'm new to rotary and i have a question.

since rotary engines require adding oil more frequently than piston engines, won't this allow for longer periods between oil changes? (since the engine is getting cleaner oil more frequently and losing the old ones)

thanks

Nope. You might need to add a quart of oil every 2000 miles or so, but your oil change interval is 5000 miles. Since the oil change only drains/changes about 3.7 quarts out of the 7 capacity, your additions and the fact that the scheduled change is only changing the half the oil means that you wouldn't want to stretch the change intervals any further.

Really, the oil usage isn't actually that much, and many piston engines use that much oil anyway!

Regards,
Gordon

My UK dealer is suggesting checking oil levels every 2 petrol stops, seems a pain to me.

I have 1500 miles on mine (Aug build) and the oil level is still at full. Did they fix something?

nothing was broken. You should use some oil. Otherwise your engine will fail. Usage will increase as your RPMs do. Would be a good idea if you hit 9K redline once a day. Fun too.

Please tell me your joking
First of all oil is the lifeblood of "any" car.
Second of all, it take all or 10seconds to check the oil. Where's the pain in that?
I'm glad I'm not going to be buying a used car from you.

And what type of oil should we use to top it off with and replace with? Dino or synthetic?

Mazda only recommends Dino.

I redline my Rex all time, hence the high oil consumption in my case:
1 qt every 1000 miles

Absolutely nothing. A synth oil that meets API Spec SL is fine.

There's a bunch of old wives tales floating around from the days when there was a certain brand of synthetic that caused problems with rotaries. On the 93-95 twin-turbo RX-7, Mazda specifically forbid the use of synthetic oil. No such restriction exists anymore for the Renesis.

Regards,
Gordon
