Advice for a 21 year old trying to achieve an rx-8??
Hello good people of the rx-8 club. I want to get an rx-8 for it was the car that made me an enthusiast in 04. My question is how shall I go about getting one. I current go to college and work part time at appsafari.com. Obviously money is a problem for me right now so there is no chance in hell I can get a new car. I've read some post in the "how you got your first rx-8" page and most of those guys arn't 21 like me. Most of those end with "I fell in love right away and was driving home in my rx-8 within the week. So I ask; any stories, any advice?

Simple answer:
Find how much it would cost you to insure you, note the average running costs and see if there's a model in your price range with a good service history.
However buying an used rx8 on a budget is not wise, things can go wrong especially if the previous owner was a hack (90% chances...)

It all depends on your budget and cash flow. With only working part time, you'll want to save as much money as you can just in case. You're easily going to spend $150 to $200 in gas a month. You'll want to put money away just in case something happens, or so you can afford to replace wear items and general maintenance, since you most likely won't be able to afford some of it on the fly (not a knock, just knowing what it's like working part time and going to school)
I would say car payment + insurance + $200 (gas and such) + $150 (maintenance and oh **** fund) is a safe way to come up with a budget for the cost of the car itself. Put as much down on the car as you can without putting you in a bad spot to lower your payments.
Don't get married to a car in college. If you can easily afford the above, great. If not, don't get it. Spend your money on booze and sex education like you're supposed to in college.
Wait a couple more years when all of your had work in college pays off and you're working full time.

Agree with the above posts. I bought mine at 19, and am now 21. The dealer wanted 22k for it, but luckily I had someone with me that knew how to haggle and I walked out paying $15,985 for a car with 35k miles on it. The car payment is $308 a month, and the insurance is $220 a month (with no accidents, and no tickets). Unlike you however I am not in college, I was to much of a wuss to go to college, so I joined the military instead took the easy way out.
That being said, it probably not the smartest idea to enter into another loan (assuming you have college loans). Even if you have the money to buy one flat out, it is a very high maintenance car (just look at some of the troubleshooting threads). Like a girlfriend only costs about the same and doesn't put out.
That being said, if you want one there will be ones around when you get out of school. Just wait, it will make it worth just a little bit more to you.

Agreed, get your priorities straight then calculate ur expenses and see if your able to afford one. You can get 04-05 pretty cheap, even some with a new low mile engine. I got my rx8 when i was 18. So I know its difficult to balance school and work. You might get a kinda high interest rate so you could get student loans to pay it off. Good luck their great cars, my 04 has been amazing to me.
