Advice on driving manual Rx-8

Hey, don't make fun of my quirky stick shift habits. I'm not the one learning how to drive MT...I mastered that at age 13. But then again, I am a girl...so maybe I'm lying?

punk/caveman! from me and my daughter, who's been driving a stick since she was 17, and from the three girlfriends of hers who she taught to drive a stick, plus the sisters of them... etc. lol

Back on topic, the only cars I had ever driven that were stick before I bought my 8 were 1996 Mustang GT, 1999 Mustang Cobra, and 2001 Porsche Carrera 4. I have actually found my 8 to be the sweetest shifting and easiest to drive of any of them (though to be fair, I have also put a hundred times as many hours behind the wheel of it).

Ahhhh yes, I do apologize for the confusion Senobeth.... I am simply speaking about the majority of women/girls that I have personally encountered. From my experience the amount of knowledge and interest in learning to drive stick is proportionally lower in females then to males.....
there are those few that strive for more and are not intimidated by something as fun, rewarding and easy as driving stick, Male and female
hahah so Caveman no, Punk defintly not! I didn't say women couldn't do it, In fact Ive taught more females then Males...but thats cause I like girls better then guys LOL....they smell better and well....well...
........Lets not get into the subject of who is better........J/K!

Depending on how quick of a learner you are, I doubt you will do significant damage to your car, and as long as you turn off while the engine is hot, you are unlikely to flood the engine.
I can't particularly answer the heat issue, but in the AT rx8s even, the center console and gear select lever also get a bit hot after some spirited driving.
I learned manual when I bought my lotus. It took me about a week or so to work the car without stalling it anywhere, and even now I still try to refine my driving skill to make everything as smooth as the auto tranmission shifts. I also had a much more expensive transmission to replace if I didn't learn how to do it properly, so perhaps it was a different motivating factor. I'd say focus on the technique and the money that would be involved if you screw up too much =D

Well said, apology thoroughly accepted, and here's to you personally encountering all the good-smelling, stick-shifting women you desire
And, Adam, I'd love to bring my daughter to the meet... but what am I supposed to do about her boyfriend??? lol
And she would so kick your butt, Rory, if I show her your post. Because I like you, I won't show it to her, so you're safe. You're welcome

throttle blipping..better known as rev matching. this is used for downshifting to a lower gear when you don't want to slow down to do so. you engage the clutch, rev your engine (blip the throttle) to the appropriate revs, downshift and disengage the clutch smoothly. now you are at a lower gear with higher revs and better power delivery.
heel-toe is the same as above but you do it while applying the brakes. used when coming into a turn fast and need to downshift and brake at the same time. kinda tricky especially with throttle-by-wire setups...hard to get a consistent throttle blip while braking at the same time with the computer trying to screw with things.
very cool techniques for the track/autox and the occassional spirited drive.

although I am not not sure how I would use double clutching in any useful way....modern trannies with synchros make double-clutching pretty unecessary for smooth shifting...some would disagree.
where heel-toe is absolutely critical is in a scenario you find at the track alot. you are coming into a turn that requires a high reving 2nd gear but you are in 3rd near redline as you enter the braking zone. the only way to work the corner correctly is to brake hard and just before you turn in and while still braking...you clutch, blip, shift, release clutch. All in the blink of an eye...literally.
When done correctly it is absolutely a thing of beauty.
