Advise for a new owner
Hello everyone, I've been looking at the RX-8 for quite a while now and am finally ready to go buy one. I was just wondering if anyone has advise for me as I go to the dealer. It seems like most people have paid at or around invoice, so I was shooting for that. Also, is there anything I should look out for as far as car salesmen trying to put one over on me. Thanks.

There's a lot of "dealer cash" now. This is money from Mazda to the dealer - not always advertised. I paid invoice minus $2,500.00. www.edmunds.com is decent source for finding the various incentives. Remember, the 2005s are coming - the dealers don't want the '04s. Now's the time to "steal" one.
Note: Yes, the dealership should make a profit (some people forget this part). But when it comes to year-end selling, we're doing them a bit of a favor taking a "previous year" model. There's still "hold back" - $$$ the dealer makes depending on how long they've had the car. The salesman still gets his "flat" ($100-200) regardless of the deal. And they'll make a ton on the backend if you lease/finance with them.

Wait until the end of the last month of the third quarter, you will have more bargaining power as all they really care about at that point in time is how many cars they moved off the lot. I bought mine at the end of the 2nd quarter on the very last day of the month, I paid 3000 below invoice. Oh and be ready to stick to your price all car salesman are slick. Also make sure you know exactly what options you want on the car, trust me if your going to make payments on something it is worth having all the toys that you want.
Cheers and hope your purchase goes well.

Choose a car on the lot if possible. Dealers don't purchase the cars, their banks do and they pay interest on each car that is on the lot, the longer the car stays on the lot the more it costs them. If there is a car on the lot you will get a better deal on it rather then one they have to order in for you.
Purchasing at the end of the month is also a good idea, the most important thing for the dealership is to move volume. The dealerships with the highest volume sales get first choice to replenish the stock, this is important so that they can have a good selection.
One last thing, Mazda is having a very strong year and are looking to finish the highest profits over other Japanese car manufacturers, they are really pushing out as many vehicles as possible to make sure they finish in front.
