Afraid To Buy An RX-8.......
i've been thinking of the RX-8 and the Nissan 350Z for quite some time now. i am leaning towards the 350Z simply because i am afraid to buy an RX-8. here's what scares me about the RX-8:
1) HAVING to add oil
2) Flooding issues
3) Seems like there's alot of people with things going wrong once they hit 50,000 miles
sad thing is, i totally prefer the looks of the RX-8 over the 350Z. but the RX-8 just scares the heck out of me. my luck usually runs bad, and i dont have any mechanical skills. if anything goes wrong, it could get very, very expensive for me.
sorry, at this point, i am just afraid to buy one, dont trust its reliability.

1.) You add a quart of oil ever couple fill ups, hardly an inconvenience.
2.) The flooding problem is mostly resolved. Just don't start it/shut it off fast to be sure...
3.) I've seen plenty of cars over 50k miles. Just get a newer one with lower miles, maintain it better, and you're good to go.
I'm up for some 9 ball!

1. Why is this scary?
2. Blown way out of proportion. It only has a chance of flooding if you start it cold, then immediately shut down while still cold. Mines never flooded.
3. What seems, and what's true is very different things.
All these issues have been brought up a millions times a week and all have been addressed, answered, beat to death. This biggest thing that scares off potential RX-8 buyers is LACK OF KNOWLEDGE!.
Test drive a Z, then test drive an 8. But definitely do some research on an 8 to suspend your presumptions.

Everyone knows the Rotary is oil injected. It is designed to burn oil.
Here are a couple threads about the VQ35, which is not designed to burn oil, but does anyway. (maybe cuz it wants to be more like the rotary?)

1) Adding oil isn't any scarier than pouring a glass of milk.... any car owner should consistently check their oil levels anyway, you just need to do it more often in an RX-8.
2) Warm up you car before you turn it off and it won't flood, or if there's no time, blip the throttle to 3500RPM just before you turn off the car.
3) Maybe you were thinking of the last gen RX-7 that had high mileage problems. The engine is as reliable as any other as long as you take care of it with proper maintenance.
There's nothing scary about owning an RX-8 dude. Unless you're scared of taking car of your car, in which case, I wouldn't suggest owning a sports car.

from the sounds of it, youve already convinced yourself but youre trying to convince us or justify why youre "afraid" of the RX8. EVERY SINGLE CAR MODEL HAS ITS BAD SEEDS AND LEMONS!!!!! INCLUDING THE 350Z!!! So what everyone here is telling you is get over it bc its not a big deal. Just bc you buy an RX8 doesnt mean youll have a stream of endless problems. Just be careful of the RX8 you go with. If thats too difficult than go for the Z. DONT keep starting threads about the same thing.

Let's just help him, then.
1.) You have to add oil every 2 miles, otherwise it will be bone dry, and the engine will fail.
2.) You flood the engine every time you turn it off, be prepaired to pay thousands of dollars a week for the dealership to fix.
3.) 50,000 miles is too much. Each RX-8 last 10,000 miles, then it will automatically get launched to the moon, where there is the RX-8 graveyard.

no, i am not trolling. just confused and uncertain about what to do. buying a vehicle is a BIG expenditure, and i am searching for that elusive light bulb that will pop on and convince me that i am making the right decision - one way or another.
i've been thinking about the RX-8 for a month now, and still cant make up my mind whether i should buy one or not.
its like, on the one hand, yes, here's the reasons that make sense to buy one. on the other hand, here's the reasons that make sense not to buy one.
so i keep searching, hoping the light bulb will pop on, one way or another.....

Here in Sweden there is alot moore people having problems with theres 350Z.
I was also choosing between these 2.
Drive them both and make your choise.
I didnt like 350Z build quality, its just like my Micra and that sucks when it comes to a sportcar.

OP, please just go buy a 350z. save us all headaches. obviously you havent done much research on the 8 to really know what you are or are not getting into.
as its been addressed
1) check oil every other gas fill-up and add as necessary. takes next to no effort, just add while your tank fills.
2) flooding issues have been resolved with ECU flashes, just dont back the 8 out of the drive and power her off. you let her warm all the way up and rev her to clear the bullets before powering her down, flooding will not be an issue.
3) every car has its few lemons in the crowd. being you are on a board with everyone having owned or does own an 8, you will get lemons in the group. go over to 350z forum and you will see issues with those cars too.
so like I stated in the beginning, go get your 350z and become a part of their boards. or better yet, have you test drove/considered a crossfire?

they ride extremely rough/rigid for a sports car. doesnt have that smooth feel/roll that you get in the 8. I too test drove them both. I had the mindset going into testing both I was about 70/30 on getting the 8 anyhow, but they had one there so I said what the hell... very stiff to drive, and the decision within a few miles in the Z quickly became 100/0. I did the necessary research prior to buying like everyone should do with EVERY car they buy. A car is not an investment but more of a money hole as it depreciates so quick. Before dropping 20k+ in a car you should know its quarks, its reviews, the things to expect and the things not to expect. It is common sense with getting a new car, period.
