Afraid To Buy An RX-8.......

OP, DON'T BUY A 350Z!
You're afraid of adding oil, and afraid of some mythical list of problems that might crop up.
You know what you need? A Toyota Corolla. Seriously. That, or a Honda Civic. You don't deserve a sports car. Go buy yourself a shopping cart like everyone else so you won't have to deal with ANY maintenance all the way to the 200,000mi mark.

Now Leesha, this is intriguing...you've had the car a year and never had to add oil? The RX-8 consumes it by design, so do you mean that you, personally - looking foxy as you do ;-) - never had to add any or that your car has never consumed any?

they ride extremely rough/rigid for a sports car. doesnt have that smooth feel/roll that you get in the 8. I too test drove them both. I had the mindset going into testing both I was about 70/30 on getting the 8 anyhow, but they had one there so I said what the hell... very stiff to drive, and the decision within a few miles in the Z quickly became 100/0. I did the necessary research prior to buying like everyone should do with EVERY car they buy. A car is not an investment but more of a money hole as it depreciates so quick. Before dropping 20k+ in a car you should know its quarks, its reviews, the things to expect and the things not to expect. It is common sense with getting a new car, period.

no, i am not trolling. just confused and uncertain about what to do. buying a vehicle is a BIG expenditure, and i am searching for that elusive light bulb that will pop on and convince me that i am making the right decision - one way or another.
i've been thinking about the RX-8 for a month now, and still cant make up my mind whether i should buy one or not.
its like, on the one hand, yes, here's the reasons that make sense to buy one. on the other hand, here's the reasons that make sense not to buy one.
so i keep searching, hoping the light bulb will pop on, one way or another.....

YOU'RE NOT READY FOR A SPORTS CAR!
Sports cars tend to have a higher cost of ownership dude. You have to pay to play. If you treat it right, you have very good chances of it lasting a long time.
Crap, or get off the pot!

If you've been this indecisive for a full month....

I can understand your concerns but lets look at them.
1) Adding oil is really nothing, the car burns oil by design and you'll learn to check the dipstick every so often. When it is time to fill her the add oil is right on top, 2 minutes later and you'll be done. This really will not be a concern for you.
2) The engine still can flood but with modifications made by Mazda over the last few years it is all but a thing of the past. To be safe never shut the car down cold, if your moving down the drive way, take it around the block to be safe.
3) The thing with a web site is you will here a disproportionate amount of problem. If a person has a problem he goes to the web to report and see what people say. That being said the 04 did have there share of teething problems. Also their is still a question about engine failures but, starting in 08 the engine received modifications which should solve the potential problems.
The best I can say is read the web site and look at reliability in Consumer Reports they rate the RX average over all. Also take what the Fan-boys tell you with a grain of salt. They will have you believe god drives an RX-8. It is a great car with some issues like any other car. The 350z had a tire wear issue which I believe was resolved with later models. No car is perfect.

i've been thinking of the RX-8 and the Nissan 350Z for quite some time now. i am leaning towards the 350Z simply because i am afraid to buy an RX-8. here's what scares me about the RX-8:
1) HAVING to add oil
2) Flooding issues
3) Seems like there's alot of people with things going wrong once they hit 50,000 miles
sad thing is, i totally prefer the looks of the RX-8 over the 350Z. but the RX-8 just scares the heck out of me. my luck usually runs bad, and i dont have any mechanical skills. if anything goes wrong, it could get very, very expensive for me.
sorry, at this point, i am just afraid to buy one, dont trust its reliability.

Agreed with the rest of the replies. Get a 350Z, or get a Honda.
Think about it...with the position you're taking now, if you go ahead and pick up an RX-8, you're going to be forever looking at your car, waiting on a massive failure of some type re: the mechanics. When the first thing goes wrong, say fouled plugs or coils, you're going to be telling yourself "I shoulda got the Z." Save yourself the anguish. The Z may not be any more reliable than an RX-8, but it will be in your mind, and you won't be walking on eggshells every time you climb in the car waiting for it to explode or something.
Enjoy the 350Z forums.

You've read enough (probably too much) about the RX-8. I hope you've read the same amount about the Z.
I did quite a bit of comparison. I chose the RX-8 because of how it fit my driving style. YMMV. At some point, though, buy either one and learn to drive it - have fun.

Some people have had issues, but I think you will find that most people do not have major issues with the RX-8. The flooding issues have been addressed already. My RX-8 usually does not burn enough oil in 3000 miles to have to add any oil. By 3000 miles, I get an oil change, and it really is not an issue. I have noticed on long road trips you usually do have to add some oil, but it usually is only once in a 1500 mile trip. If you do not know how to add oil or check it, ask someone to show you because it really is not a big deal. Keep in mind even piston engines can burn oil. So, the 350Z you might have to add oil occasionally too. If you have all the routine maintenance done on the RX-8, the chances of major issues are the same as for any car you purchase. Another way to mitigate the worry is to purchase an extended warranty when you purchase your RX-8. Personally, I would get the extended warranty with any car I purchased if I was planning on keeping it for a while. Hope to see you as a proud owner soon!

half the time I forget to add oil and the damn light comes on!! lol. Ive never had a problem with my car minus needing a new tranny which was a dogbox when I bought it. Ive had this car for 2 years and I usually add a quart between oil changes if that. But I guess nowadays you need a college edumacation to add a quart of oil to a shiny car between oil changes. Buy a 'yota.
