Annnnd.... FLooded

Well it finally happened....Got in the car moved it out of the way parked it...28 degrees out, annnd flooded. I lectured everyone at my house to drive it around the block and I do it myself!!!! Douche Bag... Oh well my fault, Roadside Assistance is amazing and they did a great job, came out in 10 minutes at 2am. It'll be fixed monday morning, a good lesson learned.

I had the same damn luck! I'm carless. :-( I popped out my sparkplugs and they were in very bad shape. They will have to be replaced.

Lol, that sucks.

But, you do know it takes about 10 seconds to de-flood the engine (unless your plugs are ruined)?

did you attempt to restart right away? how much time has passed since you shut off the car and attempted to start it again?

Take the car into the dealer and get the tsb performed for crank no start. They should deflood the engine, install new plugs, larger battery, new flash and faster spinning starter. You won't have flooding problems anymore. let them know you know about the starter replacement or they may not do it. They should have a bulletin on it with the tsb for the flooding problem.

It's refreshing to see this attitude, instead of "Mazda sucks and I'm trading in this POS car!" posts we've seen the last three winters. Like you said- lesson learned. Glad to hear roadside assistance was so prompt... nice to know they're there when needed.

dose anybody try to push start an 8 when it floods? works o my turbo fc every time if it is a bad flood. If the flood is not bad the comp fuse trick dose the job. So some people go to a dealer to unflood! also has any body tried a fuel cut switch on an 8( to prevent the condition in the first place)

Remember- these are a lot of 1st time rotary owners, and almost all of the 8's are still under warranty... having the dealer do it makes sense. For those that live in the north/cold climate, it makes even more sense to make a stink at the dealer and have them upgrade the battery and starter, and maybe get new plugs out of it for free.

New Plugs, new starter, new battery, tires rotated, new flash, recalls taken care of. All Free... I love Mazda! I new about the floodings issue, I just forgot about it this one time. Id rather take it to the dealer anyway, its still under warranty, let them deal with it. But thanks guys.

Yes it is worth while taking it in to the dealer to deflood, and the new starter is so much better than the original, I just got mine back today and I cant beleive the defference, However they left the "airpump" unplugged I had originally thought they did something to take some hp away until I plugged it back in, can anyone let me know exactly what the "airpump" does?

It runs for a few minutes after you start the car cold to help bring the cat up to operating temp faster (and hence better efficiency).

Yea the new starter and larger battery really do the trick. The auto glass place flooded my 8 after I got the new parts. It took about 15 minutes to deflood it, but we were finally able to get it started. The bigger battery is really good. It lasted for 15 minutes of starting without showing any signs of slwoing down. The older battery died after like 2 minutes

I didn't get the new starter (it wasn't out when I went in for the battery TSB a year ago), but the new battery is over twice the CCA (~300 vs 640) and makes a huge difference. I have no idea why Mazda would put such a weak battery out in the US market where the weather can fluctuate from 100+ to -20F.

Glad you had a happy ending. You also did the right thing having Mazda fix it rather than de-flooding it yourself. The more grief and expense Mazda has over this issue they better and more reliable the 2006, 2007, etc. rotary engines will be (IMHO).

Does this work on the RX-8? I used to do that with my old RX-7's when they flooded, usually about 40 mins and they would start up again. Only once I couldn't get one going so I pulled the plugs and dried them with a propane blow torch (didn't have any spare plugs), put them back and it fired right up. I haven't flooded my 8 yet but I might bring it in for the TSB to get all the new parts.

I really like to get the new battery and starter under warranty, but my dealer won't budge on it... he says that the battery is "within specs," which I am sure it is.

Mega- you need to go to another dealer... if they can't admit the stock battery is too weak for our climate, then they're just lying to themselves. A 300CCA battery in Chicago with a car prone to flooding is a joke. I started to get the same line from my guys a year ago, so I gave them the part number for the cold climate battery and said they might as well order it 'cuz I was going to hound MNAO until it was put in.

I tried to get new plugs and a new battery awhile ago when myne flooded, I tried two different dealers neither would budge. I really doubt they would have budged on the starter either. Is there a TSB for these replacements? I know there's one regarding a new battery, I tried to show that to my service manager, but he said it doesn't state they should be swapping batteries just because, rather it is just notifying them of a new part number should it need to be replaced if the stock one becomes defective.

Also, dealers only deflood once, then they charge you something like $300 for each additional one. At least myne does.
