My original issue was with someone claiming that they turn of the DSC because
I always turn it off because i can't cope with it (i react in a way, it does something else = mess...)
A car with DSC has an extra layer of protection that a non DSC enabled car does not have. It's that simple. The DSC will not impair someone driving in a way that is safe for road conditions... it will screw with someone trying to go all "Tokyo Drift" while showing off.
If your model 8 has no DSC then that's just the breaks. Maybe it was the model you could afford, maybe it was the only one the dealer had, etc. You don't have it so you can't be blamed for not turning something on that isnt there. If you do have an 8 with DSC and choose to turn it off while on a public road then you're just being stupid.
If you're on a track or auto-x then by all means hold it down and completely turn it off, if you're on a public roadway then it should stay on.
As for the example of seatbelts that's easy.. not wearing a seatbelt when it's available to you is just stupid, not having the ability to put it on because it was never there is unfortunate.

The people who feel the need to turn off the DSC while on city streets and highways are also the ones who usually end up posting about how they've dorked their rims or spun into a tree while the DSC was off.

Then again, i don't show off, i mostly track my car but i see your point while you probably miss mine, that follows alnielsen's statements.
He is more experienced than me for sure but i learnt to drive on rwd cars with no electronic helps as well. DSC is a safe option but so are driving courses.
The OP was in an artificial situation (wood, possibily ice etc) where everybody would want a help(especially with a differential doing its job), but as i stated in our roads that's useless or risky as well. If your tail goes lose on a turn at 70km\h and the dsc kicks in you find yourself straight in the middle of a turn at 50km\h with cars behind you hard braking to avoid collision is that safe?
Learning to drive is the best option, with the dsc on when you're tired\nervous\thinking about other things (and you shouldn't when you drive...) but in those very situation you should go so slow you don't need it!
I hope this explains what i mean, i found you to be a bit aggressive without any need to be.

Just because someone with certain reflexes finds it detrimental to his driving, and potentially unsafe, doesn't mean they're stupid.
On the contrary, if the person has developed a driving style where they're better able to react with DSC off, then good for them. I know that quite a few times DSC made me slew around by engaging the brakes, on very wet and slick concrete in a parking garage, suddenly because it thought I was losing control, it resulted in me nearly hitting a parked car.
DSC/TC are layers of protections yes, but they are programmed to react a certain way, which in some cases, is not the way you should react, or in certain road/driving conditions, can make matters worse.
People who should be considered reckless when turning off DSC/TC is when the driving conditions are dangerous (ice, snow, rain, wind, etc) and then proceed to drive fast or as if the conditions were optimal.

Dsc off = better driving experience if you know what to do.
I had my reflexes tested because of my sport and my reaction times are way faster than the DSC. What happens if i already corrected the problem and it kicks in?
You have to know how to drive without it to avoid its use and build the right istincts\reactions.
And yes, driving fast on public roads = stupid\fail\whatever. I think that the only time where i've gone fast on the road was because of a diarrhoea attack

Nice save by the DSC! I drive with mine disabled, why simply because its more fun!

And to the guy who said turning it off is a bad thing, thats why theres a button.
If it was that detrimental to have it turned off, either A all 8's would come equipped with it, or they would have no button where its always on, and that would be a shame.
DSC is there to aid you in tricky weather, or for unexperienced drivers who push the car farther then they personally can drive, because in most cases, the rx8 can out handle its driver.

a yugo could out handle it's driver.. if it was a poor enough driver behind the wheel.
I would ask JDM what he's doing on city streets that makes the DSC being off more fun?
Oh.. and the button is there because mazda knows people will be tracking and auto-x'ing the 8, not because they assume people will think they're cooler with it off.

Carbondale has very few "city streets" its mostly twisty back-roads which are fun to motor around after a stressful day of classes.
Cruses with the R32 (VW), sr20 240sx, and shelby gt500 are better suited with DSC off.
on crowded roads, with stop and go lights that arnt very dramatic, there is no reason to ever turn dsc off.

What about the ppl that use the DSC as a safety net all the time and drive knowing that it will kick in. When I turn mine off on public roads (which I do when it rains and I fancy some fun) I drive accordingly and only nail it when safe to do so. When its on Im far more unconcerned and wait for it to catch me. Same as in the old days when people would buy Astra GTEs and assume becuase they were a GTE they would corner better.
Just becuase you turn it off for driving doesnt make you dangerous, try riding a motorcycle without a crash helmet, strangely enough you ride slower without, same with and without leathers.
DSC has saved me a couple of times as well...couple of times in the dry as well !
