Any trouble selling your 8?
Ok...now I have heard about the engine recalls...I have an 2004 automatic. Of course I am trying to sell mine and this recall is a concern.....I have a feeling I have to wait till I get a fix on my engine.... if it even qualifies.... and if not, who will want to buy it?? I have had some rough idling issues, some power loss at times and some bucking in winter when cold. Now it's not all the time...very tempermental I guess depending on temps, humidity etc. I have been told all along it's the gas I am using....bad gas. I put premium in 95% of the time and now 100%. I am looking to buy the CX 7 as my next vehicle. I get a feeling I am gonna take a nice loss on this car now which my hubby may make me hold on to it for the last 2 years if this is the case. Anyone else have "guesstimates" on the outlook of selling our 8's will be? Anyone in the process of selling or have sold recently? I have been trying for 5 weeks now and no luck. $18,900 including winter tires for a silver GT with Black and red leather, rotary accents, piano black b pillars w/ 38,500 miles on her......a pretty good price I think. I know it's not sports car season any longer. Hmmmm....

I have been looking to buy for 1 month... in the past month I have seen at least three MY04 RX-8 GT Manual with 30,000 miles sell for 16k+change. I would guess that an automatic would be at least 1-2k less (14-15k). Now with the recall information, I estimate that selling prices will depreciate further. Good luck with the sale. I think I saw your ad on cars.com or craigslist.

Sadly, I think it's a buyer's market in the RX-8 world, and it will probably stay that way for at least a year or two. Good news for people like me that are looking to buy in the future, but I feel awful for people that want to sell now. I don't think you will get more than 17k for it.

Yikes...
Yikes....$14-15,000...if that's the case I guess I may be keeping my car 2 more years. $17,000 sounds more like it and that still is taking a hit! I am on Craigslist and Autotrader. Lots of scams coming my way. Good for the buyers I guess, bad for me. Thanks for wishing me luck...looks like I will need it! ARGH!!

Take a look at what comparable RX-8s are selling for at CARMAX (click here ). Also check Edmunds, Kelly Blue Book and NADA on-line. You should be able to get a feel for what a private party sale goes for in your area.

Unfortunately, I think the early year, '04 and it's reputation for problems, coupled with an auto tranny, with it's reputation for problems, is gonna give you a rough time when selling.

Yes, I have done all my research and my price is good. I keep checking monthly because it changes. All three sources have different numbers for Excellent, Good and Fair. I figure mine is between good and excellent. Thanks for your input.

I work at different car dealers and saw 3 RX8's on different dealer lots just today. These were not Mazda dealers so they were used, and thats more then I see in a week on the road out here. I think people are starting to get rid of them and just taking the hit, which means prices are going to continue to slide down...
I have a ford dealer in Keene that has 2 RX8's. One 04 basic with no options, selling for 20G, and one 04 with sports pack, selling for 21G. Didn't get the milage...

Like someone else suggested, I think the best place to sell it is… here.
When I sold my '99 Miata (10th Anniversary Edition), I knew it was unlikely I'd get a fair price from "normal" car buyers "out there." To them, my car was just a nice, blue Miata. But to a Miata fan on miata.net the car was a special Miata—and worth a little bit more. I think the 8 is like that—not that desirable to the ordinary car buyer, but something special to someone who reads about 8's and wants one.
What's more, my '99 Miata was one of the Miatas with a replaced engine. To the casual buyer, that might be a "red flag." But to people who visited the Miata forum every day who were familiar with the details, it was no big deal. And it wasn't.

I agree New Yorker. The RX 8 is for a particular person who can appreciate it and also won't mind some of it's quirks. I have the vin# within the recall so it will be interesting to see if I get a new engine....I hope I do....it will be like a new car and it shouldn't be a huge deal. Well, again all.....it's a beauty for sale for $18,900 OBO Silver GT w/red/blk leather, rotary accent pkg, piano black b pillars, Bose etc...includes a set of winter tires!!!!

That sounds like a steal! And there's another good reason to buy from you—or anyone selling here: the current owner is more likely to be someone who pampers, fawns and fusses over their 8—rather than abusing or neglecting it. That removes the BIGGEST question mark over buying used, IMHO.

I don't know--almost 19k seems a little high considering you can get brand new '05s right now in the low 20's and GT 05's in the mid-20s OTD. I just bought one, and like someone else said, it's definately a buyer's market for the 8 right now (at least in my area). Have you looked at the thread about closing prices people have been getting? (I would post a link but I don't know how--just search for it.) Maybe that will help you price it--although if you can find someone who will buy it for near that price, great for you. I certainly think it's worth your price, but unfortnately I'm not sure you will get it . Good luck!

04 automatic with close to 40K miles would probably be a tough sale regardless of price, no offense. Now with this engine recall shaking things up it will likely be even tougher. You might be better off hanging on to it for a while until things settle down. I've about convinced myself to keep mine 4-ever. (04 6MT ST Titanium Grey, 43K miles) Best of luck with whatever you decide to do.
