Anyone ever use this?

I saw this in the skymall mag on the plane. Does anyone know if it works? I guess I'll buy it and try, if I get at least 3.5 quarts out then it works right?

You can get an electric one for half that price. It's about the only way to change oil in a boat with an inboard engine and they do work well too.

I had to get a topsider from westmarine which is a hand pump metal can version that holds 8 quarts of oil. I got it for my Mercedes. The newer MB's have aluminum oil pans with steel drain plugs which instantly strip out the pans. MB techs are instructed to use vaccum extractors as the drain plug is pretty much a train wreck. The sump in the MB is such that you can get pretty much all the oil out through the dip stick tube using this device. Don't know how it would work in the 8.

I think the topsider is around $30.00.

I have used this for three years now. Pump about ten times and it goes to work. Warm oil syphons better and faster.

I like to drain from the bottom, since that's where particulate matter will sit.

$25 at Mazda for a oil change and a free car wash. Why bother doing it yourself?

Myself and others have had Mazda mess up an oil change. If you want things done right, you need to do it yourself.

I have complete faith in the Mazda here. Depends on the shop IQ, I guess.

And if Mazda screws up, they would pay for any repairs, right?

With the fumoto, I presume that its fairly easy to open even without jacking up the car. I think I'm going to not bother using my topsider because I have always had the same gunk at the bottom of the pan concerns.

Thanks Swoope, good write up. I think one if the guys actually demonstated that method at our last meet in Austin. I like changing my oil myself and I have thought about the fact that more sediment would come out through the drain pan but man this would make oil changes even easier. I also heard that Mercedes does it this way so maybe the sediment issue is meaningless.

And no, the ZEX kit has been installed since before vacation. It is the best bang for the buck IMO, but my clutch will not last much longer so that is the next item on my list. For now the bottle sits in the trunk well with the ZEX mounts but the 10lb tank is too big so I am toying with using a longer but way thinner chrome oxygen tank that I found in storage at work but I need to find out if I can attach the valve from my zex bottle to it. No rush but I will post pics once it's mounted permananty. I want to get it dynoed first and then i will head to the track.

funny, my father was doing the same thing 25 years ago on his boat. had a 23 foot fiberglass boat, chevy v8 inboard with volvo penta outdrive. had a little pump that he would connect to a drill motor, stick the hose over the dipstick tube, put the other hose in a container, and start the drill spinning. oil was out of the engine in no time.
