Red face anyone know how to change oil on the new 09 rx8???

hey guys I'm in the middle of changing the oil on my r3... Just wondering where is the oil drain plug for this thing? I already took off the underside cover and I can see the oil filter at the bottom but I can not seem to find the drain plug.... All I see is a sensor there, anyone? Any help will be appreciated thanks!

you have a flat hex nut about four inches from the oil filter . of courses all of the pan must be off to get to both of them you need to learn to use the search

It's probably too late..

But as an 09 owner yet to change their oil.

1. You need to remove the hard silver (metal) sump guard (I think 7x 10mm bolts)

2. You then need an 8mm HEX (allan) Key with a long handle as the sump plug has changed to a recessed FLAT Looking type.

3. You have also seen the new oil filter (longer).

NO , the Series II RX-8's have a different Sump Guard that has to be removed to find the Drain plug/filter.

Thanx guys I found it... I removed the sump guard, found the flat hex nut, and changed my oil. What a pain in the a$$ to remove the filter for the first time though let me tell you. I had to punch a screw driver through the side of it just to get it loose enough to twist it off by hand. Anyway Thanx to everyone who contributed your advise really helped.

Great news, tell me please, is there much room to get your hand around the filter so you can loosen it to unscrew the filter...

I some how don't think so..

That is why I have ordered the genuine oil filter tool (from Mazda Australia, only $8.85AU), those wrench caps that goes on the end of the filter to remove it.

Genuine Mazda Part # 49 G014 001

Just be careful the ones US Mazda Dealers sell (well some) are non genuine and for 76mm Cap Oil Filters, you need a 66mm one that will fit, for the OEM Filter.

I guess Mazda USA have the genuine ones?

There was barely enough room to get my hands in and twist the filter off. I'm sure the oil filter tool from mazda would have helped though. Good luck changing your oil. Hopefully this thread helped. And thanx for the part number.

It was lost in translation in my training but how many qts. did it take? Our trainer said some like 7 or 9 qts. , I forgot but honestly I had trouble understading him in a 15 min. training and I wasnt sure if that was right.

Yes, check out my sticky thread on the Mechanical Changes to the S2 RX-8, there are so many and I am slowly getting through all of them, well I am trying...

Mazda have just about replaced every component (mechanically) on this car...it is almost ALL new!

Yeah maybe thats it, honestly they use different measurements in japan so he might have meant that or something. Dont worry we havent made any yet, if any 09's go bad we have about 8 brand new AT's and MT's to ship out before we rebuild any.

Part of the '09 redesign (all variants). The oil filter is now on the bottom.

So, what difference are there between the new version and the previous one as far as the oil change procedure is concerned?

Ywa air~ That's pretty much standard on all new cars. Use the screw driver.

After that ..... never take it in as they will use an air impact gun.

all rotaries up until now had the oil filter pedestal on the rear iron facing upwards on the RX-7 and at a slant on the RX-8. the 83-85 RX-7's with the 12A's are the only odd man out with the beehive water to oil oil cooler on the rear iron. all other years incorporated a front mount oil cooler(s).
