Anyone who wants an RX-8 has already got it?

The RX8 is not a Miata ... I don't think it'll ever be...but this is why I have both.

You know, look at the G35, 350Z etc....how many people actually use the car to its potential anyways? Both of those cars around my area are a dime a dozen, that in itself is a turnoff for me in the cars. And I've always been confused on how we can put the STIs and the EVOs and even the SRT-4 in the same class. How can you justify all the crap flinging when you're comparing turbos vs. naturally aspirated. That's like apples and oranges.
In any case, everyone is posting numbers, this is faster than that, that is faster than this, what happened to purchasing a car because you enjoy it? It's fast enough for me, as I'm sure it is for most people who own one. If I wanted something faster, I'd purchase a faster car, its so simple. My goal in finding a car was to find one which reminds me of flying an aircraft. The RX-8 came out on top. I don't care the numbers an STI puts out, or if an EVO is AWD, or if SRT-4s blow up, each car has a certain type of person who would purchase them. IKE loves his WRX because it's fast, and handles well. He probably even likes how it looks, its the car for him. I love my RX-8 for the same reasons. Could IKE's WRX beat me in a race, sure. Am I ever going to race him or anyone else in an STI, probably not.
The RX-8 is a sexy, smooth ride.

I don't think its a requirement to own and RX-8 to post on here, and I'm willing to bet there are RX-8 owners including myself who belong to other boards of other cars. Ike appreciates the RX-8 for what it is. I personally think the WRX is ugly, but it has other features that are quite appealing and I have respect for it, and I don't think people buy them for appearance much anyways. Maybe there are people on here he enjoys conversing with and there is a lot to be learned here that isn't RX-8 specific. Chill out man, if he bothers you just dont respond. everything he says anyways is either true or meant lightheartedly

Man, getting sucked into posting on this thread again:
1. Who cares about 0-60, 1/4-mile or even lap times. It's all about driving enjoyment.
2. I wish I could have an 8 and a WRX (for those bad weather days)
3. I find the 8's styling and interior get too little credit. The interior harmony is excellent and cannot be matched by virtually all of its competition. The same can probably be said for the exterior, in my opinion. This put me over the top at purchase decision time.
4. Sports cars are niche vehicles. It is a small percentage of the entire car market. This makes it very competitive. I have had countless people ride in my car, or just look at my car and just rave about how wonderful it is, but it doesn't mean they are going to buy one because they don't need one or can't get one for whatever reason. That is why RX-8 sales will always be modest.
5. I like missin's commercial ideas.
6. Wannahave, you are a piece of work, and I mean that in a good way. I like your enthusiasm.
7. Last but not least, those who do not own the 8, and even those who do own the 8 and feel it is underpowered... try driving your car on a track, or constantly keep it above 6,000 rpm and then report back to us on whether you think the car is not powerful enough to be extremely fun. Unfortunately, you have to work to make this car go, but it does go. And it's just a shame that it's not practical to be in this part of the rev range on normal roads and in traffic situations. Put me on an abandoned road though, and this car can scoot.

orry, I'm not buying your argument. I'd rather have an ///M3, NSX or C6 on a track vs. the RX-8.
The RX-8 might be more fun and is definitely much less expensive than those cars, but the same driver (with some skill) would turn faster laps in the above cars, especially on a course with longer straights like Road America. The M3 also has SMG II gearbox which would also be an advantage over the RX-8 when it comes to lap times.

These are of course not an rx8 (we all can't be as blessed), but from a Mazda 6. Obviously the 8 has an ever so slight advantage over the 6, being as its RWD, with an LSD, a better weight distribution, more power, an extra gear, and 200 lbs less weight.

I assume it shows a driver in a stock Mazda 6 passing faster cars. But as you stated earlier, it's the driver, not the car. I've been in prepped Mustang Cobras with R comps and been passed by a Miata. Although the miata is a potent weapon, it shouldn't be able to hang with a prepped Cobra (about 450hp) on the track.

Aye but the point is...the 8 isn't a slouch. It can and will pass those cars, because the drivers are never equal...regardless of the class your in.
Would you rather have an M3 or a C6 over an 8? Of course...but those cars are in a completely different class, and cost about 20-30k more then the 8. Actually considering how the M3 has been doing lately, and the rather poor performance (or at least drivers) of the c6's at recent events, I'd take the 8 myself. I mean come on...for the price of the M3 CSL, you could put 2-3 8's on the track, and just box the m3 in and keep it from passing .
I just think everyone always seems to discount the 8 because it doesn't feel fast driving on the street...when in fact its already far too fast for the street as is, just like the 6.
I always find it ironic that I seem to be defending the 8 on the 8 forums, while the 8 owners tend to overly bash their own car =/.
Technically I think we are arguing similar points.
We both agree its the driver that makes the car fast.
I debate that the 8 is fast, and just requires a suitable driver to push it into the level of competition of some of the other cars mentioned.
You argue with the same quality of driver, the other cars would be faster.
I then counter argue saying that no two drivers are ever identical in skill level, and that the playing field would still be pretty even.
Then of course, an M3 CSL, or a C6 make **** poor track cars, because of the massive cost to repair the things when they eventually go off (not IF, when). Same with the 8...you really need something cheap that you aren't afraid of driving to the edge, and not particuarlly worried about smashing into the wall =/. So I guess the whole argument is mute, other then me wasting time at work instead of writing nasty letters to seagate about the batch of hd's they sent me all being massively bad.

I totally agree with what you said in there. And I think we can both agree that the RX-8 has the potential to smoke Ike's Subaru WRX on a track. :D

dwynne: I don't understand how a WRX driver can have 4000+ posts on the RX-8 board. A certain phrase comes to mind but I won't say it now.
As for the S2000: The RX-8 is more fun to drive IMHO, so I think over time you will realize this and eventually sell it to make room for more time in the 8. Maybe get a Miata for when you're itching to have the top down?

I think the RX8 suffers from market recognition - ask any 10 year old to name you a fast car and he'll say Corvette, Mustang, Ferrari you won't hear RX8 - I don't own a RX8 yet - I never buy a car in its inception year - always wait till they iron out some of the kinks - therefore by the 2006 year they should have resolved 95% of the issues with the car - but I did test drive it and IMO it's is the best ride I have had in any car - I am not looking for staright line speed I am looking for driving enjoyment and the RX8 has that - so let the others have the muscle but finesse will always win at the end

I still strongly believe that there are few places on public roads that you can safely enjoy the 8. That probably goes for most sports cars. But I think most of the people who complain about their 8's are the ones that are driving stoplight-to-stoplight around town, or always driving it in rush hour traffic.
There's no doubt that the 8 was made to be driven, and has the capability of being driven hard.

Anything with a V8 is really not in the same category IMO. I don't doubt some people cross-shop these categories, but if you pick one over the other it's not because one is better. It's just because that's the car that appealed to you the most.
