apex seals Q.
hey guy~!
Do you guys know how easily apex seals breaks down on RX-8??
heard that RX7 had to rebuilt the engine every 80,000Km/h
and
RX8 has to rebuilt the engine when it gets to around 120,000Km/h..
this sentence i heard from technician
My friend is getting 04' RX8 soon but since he heard that .. you know..
i'm so curious too~!
is it TRUE of FALSE

umm rumors are rumors until proven true or false right?
tell your friend to research up the engine design of the Rx-7 compared to the Rx-8... to your suprise one is FI and the other is N/A . ;p and then compare the old Rx-7s that were N/a to the Rx-8 and see how many miles the old N/A rX-7s were known to accumulate compared tot he FI Rx-7s.
I've seen some rotory motors reach 200K+ Miles! so to answer your question... tell your friend to buy one, keep up to date with daily maintainance, drive it untill the motor blows up.. and then post and let us know how many miles he accumulated. :p

but i was mixing a cocktail in the back of my car.... it was in a cocktail zone..... and we had flags up....
some weird sound, / vibe.... blew my apex seal..... i swear... my sisters brothers mother is a master tech with kia.... he heard it and ran over from the next park.
beers

Basically we've all been duped and at exactly 120,000km our apex seals will suddenly melt because your friend the technician, who, let me guess, has never worked on a rotary engine said so...ok.
See how silly it sounds now? If not, go post a MPG, or flooding post none of those have been discussed either. Like most cars if taken care of this car should have an average reliability in comparison to other cars made today.

The 3rd gen RX-7 suffered from poor cooling. This combined with a change in the water seal material from the previous RX-7 caused the rubber seals to leak over time right around the spark plug holes. the heat did them in. This caused a water leak which at the very least needed to be fixed by opening the engine up. Many 3rd gen owners have also modded their cars without knowing how and why things work the way they do and have been personally responsible for their engine's demise. Mazda did offer stainless steel water o-ring shields on it's remanufactured motors and through the aftermarket as a fix to the o-ring issue. It still didn't address the poor cooling of that car. That was a car design flaw and not an engine one. None of these are apex seal problems. Only human error seems to contribute to that.
The RX-8 has had a few engine failures. Some have been from poorly tuned and designed turbo kits which is no fault of the engine. Othes have failed from oil related issues that again go back to cooling. Once again not an apex seal issue. I'm sure you'll have a couple of legitimate failures here and there but show me an engine that doesn't.
There have been many rotaries that have hit the quarter of a million mile mark. The rotary is not an inherently unreliable device. Quite the opposite is actually true. Many rotary owners are inherently unreliable though and that is the source of many problems.
