Back of the front seats...
Ok-my kids haven't sat in the back yet. But I was wondering what you all do to keep their shoes from ruining the back of the front seat when they do go back there. I'm not sure I want to throw seat covers on the 8. Should I tied them up? :D

amputate their feet?
I had the same issue with my kids in my other car - the way we solved it was amazingly simple -- we bought big down slippers in adult sizes from Restoration Hardware (I think they are called "foot duvets") - and kept them in my car stuffed into the map pockets. Then we just slipped them over the kids' shoes when we put them in the car seat - they were called "daddy's car shoe socks" (hey, whatever ...), and the kids enjoyed wearing them.

The problem is that their shoes can scratch the seatback - if it's leather it will leave long digs in it (my brain not working - can't remember what my seatbacks look like). My "Daddy's Shoe Socks" thing worked great - the kids thought they were cool, and we just kept them in the car and every now and again tossed them in the washer.

Take the wife's minivan....or if she's a "modern" mom, the SUV! :D
Who wants to interfere with the 8 experience by introducing kids into the vehicle?

My first thought was "Take their shoes off."
My second thought was, "Okay... NOW I know why whenever I'm in an airplane or a movie theater I'm constantly having to turn around and glare at the brat behind me who won't stop kicking the back of my seat!"
Maybe you should simply teach the kids that FEET SHOULDN'T TOUCH THE SEATS. There are lots of people destined to sit in front of your kids in the future who will thank you, and it will spare your little darlings the trauma of being scolded by a pissed off stranger.

My 2-year-old in a forward-facing toddler seat gets her shoes removed by the Cool-Blue-Dad when the Cool-Blue-Dad buckles her into her chair. I simply drop them on the floor in front of her (and I make sure she wears only velcro-fastners). Re-shoeing her doesn't add much more time to unbuckling her and boosting her out.
I completely sympathize with the airline/movie problems, but it's hard to force that level of obedience on younger kids (and I'm a rigorous trainer). I like StewC625's idea, but I think I'd dislike the extra things in the back of the `8 so I'll keep 'un-shoeing' the 2-year-old until she learns proper respect for the back of the front-passenger seat sometime about age 5 or 6.
The real key is size - if their thighs are not long enough to allow their knees to bend at the front of the seat then their lower legs stick straight out and their feet will contact the seat in front of them (unless the driver is 5'1" and hugging the steering wheel to drive).
