Bad day for Titaniums...
I was coming home from shopping today and saw a Titanium 8 on Blanco road with severe front end damage. I commented to my wife and son about how safe the cars are in a crash. 30 minutes later, my son and I were headed back out to a store, and I was T-boned on the driver's side by a Honda doing about 50. There was a long line of cars that were turning into our subdivision. everyone was slowing down (or so I thought), so I pulled out and got hit by someone going around them. Thank God for the side airbags, or I would not be writing this tonight. This is a very safe car. My son and I walked away relatively unhurt. I have a neck sprain and some abrasions on my right arm. The girl driving the Honda was OK too - she just got a cut below her knee. I thank God no one was seriously hurt.

This is a common sort of crash on roads with two or more lanes going in one direction. Someone in front wants to turn right, someone farther back in the line zips out to the left lane to drive by everone else (driving to the store is a competition, after all) and the poor person trying to pull out to the left across two lanes gets blasted. The only time this is worse is when people are trying to turn through a light and someone blows through and nails 'em.
Sorry to hear about your wreck, but glad that you and your son are safe!

Wow that is amazing!
Glad to hear minimal injuries as well.
Part of why insurance is less expensive than some other sports cars is the fact that the majority of accidents in the 8 incur minimal personal injury. A replacement car is much less expensive than hospital bills for major injuries...

These accidents lately....it's true what they say about daylight saving time screwing with people's brains this time of year. That, and the fact that it's easier to get a driver's licence than a library card in some <cough, Ontario!> jurisdictions.

Damn, hate to hear it. Glad you and your son are ok! I live in a neighborhood like that as well, a lane of traffic on each side of the road, with turn lanes that idiot people use to go around cars turning into the two opposite 'hoods that have stopped...thus creating t-bone situations like yours! I hope I can keep my anger in check if someone were to do that to me. Having your child with your probably helps keep anger down and you more focused on how they are feeling. But damn, I would be pissed otherwise.

i just recently had an accident too and i have the opposite thought, i hit a tree bad enough and deeply enough to crack my radiator, and yet the airbags didn't even go off. but i'm glad (i guess?) to hear that if it had been more serious things would have been alright. again, sorry to hear about the accident and glad you're ok

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
I talked to the repair place today, and the adjuster came in to check things out, but hasn't made a decision yet - he said it's 'borderline'. I went to get my things out of the car today, and took a closer look - lots of suspension damage, 3 deployed air bags (all on the driver side), and possible minor frame damage. I need to do some checking tonight to see what an '04 with 74K (32K on the engine) is worth.
Here are some pics so you can see how well engineered this car is.

phew...they sure did get a peice of you.
I'd cross my fingers for them to total it myself and get the money for it. Although you wouldn't really get the value of what it's worth to you, you know how it goes...once their wrecked that badly, they never are the same again.
Reguardless, still glad you walked away.

Thanks for the pics. Some really bad damage. She almost went directly into your door. Thank goodness for side beams and curtain/side airbags.
Glad to hear everyone is okay. Good luck and keep us posted. Unfortunately an 04 with that many miles is probably not going to be worth tons. KBB inflates prices used 8 prices more than Edmunds.

Good to hear there were no serious injuries.
As warped as that tire looks - I'd be shocked if it's really "minor" frame damage.
Was she using a turn lane to pass, or was it a 4 lane road?

It was one lane each way, with no center turn lane or right turn lane. I think what happened is the cars that were turning right into my subdivision all pulled far enough over onto the shoulder for her to get by.

Well, the insurance company declared it a total loss. They are saying the actual cash value is $16,575. I think that's rather low - the car was in pristine condition, a Grand Touring package with navigation. It was an '04 with 74K miles, but the engine was replaced at 47K miles.
What do y'all think - am I getting screwed? I figured it'd be worth at least another couple grand.

74K miles? Yeah, that sounds about right, at least not considering an engine replacement.
Consider that on my 2005 RX-8 with 36K miles, sport package, the value is something like $18K.
I don't think that they really considered the engine replacement, so you can try to haggle with them about that, maybe a half a grand more.
