Oil changes , rotate tires , this is pretty much your basic maintenance . The same for all cars .

For the rotary just check your oil more often.
Like the others mention all this has been disgust so do a little searching and you'll be okay.

The owner's manual is a good place to start. Read that first, then try the search button.

1. to cause loathing or nausea in.
2. to offend the good taste, moral sense, etc., of; cause extreme dislike or revulsion in: Your vulgar remarks disgust me.

Do a little searching and you'll be okay.

you guys are all ******** for not helping him!

To answer the OP's question: there is no maintenance for a rotary car. You just fill it up with gas, and change the oil every 25,000 miles.

I guess you can tell who's an *******.

Maddy - you've discovered the dark side of the site. People here do get impatient at questions that are asked over and over.

But... Nothing really special about maintaining an RX-8, other than checking the oil more often than you would on a lesser car, and knowing that it LIKES to be revved high and run hard. The FAQ here really does cover the important stuff. The owner's manual has a section on user maintenance. Aimed at people with an IQ of 50 and all thumbs, but it covers the basics.

I go along with the common wisdom (all cars, not just 8s) that oil and filter should be changed twice as often as the manufaturer's "normal" interval.

Watch out for dealer-designed scheduled maintenance. They tend to charge a lot of money for not very much work. Follow what the owner's manual says. Keep receipts and documents for maintenance - you may need to prove you followed the book if you have a warranty claim.

There's a great DIY section here if you decide to do things like change your own oil, or maybe need to change a bulb. Or even wonder how some things are done, even if you'll never do them yourself.

Have fun with your car, and come back and tell us about it.

Ken

Indeed. It's the guy who can't detect blatant sarcasm.

I'm starting to think we need a section called "New and Future owners" and just start a thread for each common question... I know we have the FAQ but people must not think it has answers like this, so if you had a thread called "basic maintenance" and "oil questions" and the like, more people might notice/read it... just a thought. Anyways, like people have said, just read around a bit... not much, just check your oil ever few fill ups and make sure it's not getting low and such.

Applogies for being rude to you. I had a feeling that the original poster might not be able to tell sarcasm. By that point, he had apologized for his original "feed me" post. I thought he had earned a break.

hehe. No need for that.

Post #10 set the mood. Usually we get someone asking a noobish question, a few people partially helping, a few people ranting about not searching, then someone comes in and accuses the rest about being jerks, and offers up random advice on the topic. Then we get a few dozen posts that may or may not be on topic, till the thread dies out like the hundreds that came before it.

I was trying to speed it along

Maddy, As you get older you'll have to learn to develop a thicker skin here and other places ok. That's just life, and it really is a crapshoot anyway you look at it. Most of these guys and gals are hard core gear heads, and even harder core rotorheads, so learn to over look their sarcasm, and join in and have fun.

As to this thread, Ken took the time to type out some seriously good advice. However those that recommended search engines, sticky's and FAQ here are awesome as well.

Remember this forum was developed by those that LOVE this car...and collectively have vast knowledge. If you look in places like the Lounge you will see that for the most part we are all just plain folks and good folks ok, and with any younger generation, or "noob" there is a little fun to be poked. No serious harm is ever intended though. You just have to learn to read between the lines...

I just had a funny thought...

I have a feeling that if I did a search for something like "basic maintenance", I'd probably get a pageful of threads by newbies asking the OP's question, where all the replies basically stated that they should do a search.

In all seriousness...In the past week I've had several questions where the key search terms were three letter words. I've found that the forums here basically return zero results when the search word is three letters or less (and it doesn't advise you that the search word was too short, it just tells you that no results were found). So an added piece of advice I'd give to someone trying to search for answers and not coming up with what they need would be for them to use Google to search this site. There's a thread (here) that talks about how to do that.

I agree, the search on this site blows.

Maddie: Here's a handful of tips:

- Oil changes - every 3000 to 5000 miles (convert as needed to KM) is fine - oil and filter both. There is a great DIY in the DIY section for this, or take it to a good mechanic shop or dealership. Avoid quicklube places. 5w-20 is recommended, 5w-30, 10w-30 or 40 are all fine.

- Tires: Rotate every 5000 to 7500 miles

- Oil consumption - it's normal - my car eats a quart every 2500 to 3000 miles. I check my oil every saturday AM along with giving it a wash and vaccuum and checking the tire inflation. Good "me time" with my toy. Always followed with a spirited drive. Keep an extra quart or so in your garage for oil add time. I actually continually add oil between changes - adding a few ounces every saturday to maintain the level at full.

- Visit your redline buzzer frequently to maintain the grin on your face.

- Keep it clean and shiny so as not to shame all other RX-8 owners in the world with your dull and dirty ride.

- Gas mileage on this car generally blows. It's just the way it is.

- Beyond that, check your owners manual for bigger maintenance issues.

Good luck and enjoy the car.

Stew

Cool

I'm new to the 8 and I really enjoyed your post. Thank you! I never been in any club forum of any type. This whole thing is new to me. Thanks for the simple and factual answer. I've worked on old cars and Harleys, but the 8 can scare you a bit when you open the hood and have no idea wtf is going on under there!
