I had a '96M myself, came with pretty sticky 'stones as well.

I have noticed on a lot of cars these days the "warning" labels about short tread life. More or more cars with sporting intentions are coming with softer sticky tires - that do not last long. And I applaud the move. Folks don't seem to understand that soft tires = ultimate grip and that translates into better corning and better braking. Even if you are not going around 10/10ths all the time there may come a time in an emergency situation where you need all the grip the tires provide.

If this bothers folks, then they should get some 80k miles "rocks" to put on the car and give up all the performance and safety of the better tires.

The stock S02s on my S2000 lasted about 12k miles on the rear - and I am on old-fart and don't do any tire spinning launches. I DO drive the car as it was intended which does mean in a very spirited manner :D Having to replace the tires sooner than other folks is the price I pay. I think about $180 each from TireRack.

I agree about the huge (and mostly heavy) wheels they put on cars these days. Someone with a sports pack G35 was complaining about it - and in the OEM 19" size there are only 2-3 choices at TireRack and all of them are expensive. The 18" RX-8 OEM size does offer a few more choices - but as you say probably more 17" choices for less money.

I couldn't agree more on all points. The '96M was a neat little car, eh?

The weight of the 18's are my biggest complaint- I can't imagine how nimble the '8 would be with half the unsprung weight on each corner. Oh yeah I can... I used to own a Miata
