Beginner at clutch starting from stop- 1st or 2nd?

Ok green light, annd ease the clutch [2nd] slip slip revvvvvvv chug chug chug fail.....

or

slip rev going going now outa rev onto 2nd, wow that didnt get me far at all...

Should I be starting on a flat road by slipping second or starting in first and just puting up with the tiny *** first gear span?
Im new at clutch but Ive managed to get shifting down for everything cept starting from a stop without excesssive slipping or chugging?

Start in 1st, step heavily onto the gas, and quickly release the clutch. <3

Only start in 2nd or 3rd on Ice when you need to reduce torque as much as possible. When starting on dry warm roads do first and over rev until you get the hang of it. Better to over rev than bog and kill the engine.

One really neat clutch trick is to start in 2nd when you've slowed to almost a stop, but not completely.

You know, at all those stop signs you're creeping through.

use 1st if you dont want to waste your clutch too much or slip the hell out of it if you want to use 2nd.

Starting in 2nd gear is hard on the drive train, and what do you mean tiny span? Hopefully you mean how its a short gear and don't mean the top speed. First gear takes you up to 45mph. How long do you want to go in first gear?

Camaro 1st Gear Redline = 50MPH
Mustang GT 1st Gear Redline = 40MPH
Charger 1st Gear Redline = 42 MPH
Challanger 1st Gear Redline = 49MPH
350Z 1st Gear Redline = 39MPH

So it looks like we are pretty in line with the competitors as far as first gear goes in sports cars.

you'll get the hang of it. Like everyone said, 1st gear unless its really slippery (though, i still use first...anyway), give it a bit of gas and slowly let off the clutch at the same time, like if there was a bar connecting the two pedals, as you push the gas in slowly, start slowly letting off the clutch. (it is a rotary, so more rpm won't hurt it at all, as its been stated, a little extra revving is better than not enough and bogging down/stalling). Just work on it until you get it fluid.

oh, and from a stop on a hill, make sure you give it good revs (if you NEED to, pull the ebrake and hold the button in, start reving and when you're releasing the clutch, put the ebrake down, this way you dont have to try to go from brake to throttle real fast)

I'm gonna assume you meant 35 mph, I just tested mine and it got to 34 when the tach read 9k. I know s1 and s2 transmissions are different, but is there really a 10 mph difference there?

OP, if your just learning manual then find a nice big empty parking lot and practice like hell in there. You wont be scared of stalling or causing anyone else any problems so that's the easiest and best way. This car is a bit more difficult to learn on than something with more torque imo, but its not that bad.

When I start from a dead stop I always feather/slowly let the clutch out from its biting point til I am going and usually about 1.5k rpm if I can. Did that with my last car and still had the original clutch at 110k miles. Maybe your letting it out to fast, thats what it sounds like to me.

I have broken 40mph in my eight in first gear, its S1... any other changes you have made? Maybe the 300-500 rpm bug got you this time?

i have tried starting in second many times. you really have to know where the catch is for that. but it doesnt seem worth it because it takes longer for the car to get going [mini vans start passing you].

when you live in a city where stop signs are on every block, using 2nd becomes helpful than 1st.

go to a parking lot, step on the clutch, put the car into first, slowly let the clutch out without giving it any gas, you will notice at some point the car will start slowly creeping forwards, remember the position of the pedal.

When you reach that point give it gas and let the clutch go (but do it smoothly), should make your starts alot smoother.

Well I dont want to sit here and redline it in first every stop I make. I can see if Im trying to go fast or in a hurry, but I mean for daily driving n with people in the car. My first only goes to about 25 or so.
I guess its probably bad that Ive gotten fairly good at starting from a stop in second. I know Ill probably kill the clutch if I continue it.
gahh it just seems like all my gears are one tooth too low, even on the interstate.

its called a manual transmission you gotta work on the gears. if you just want one gear for all, get an automatic.

The car is geared the way it is for a reason. It feels to me like they are long gears, but that's just because of the high rev limit.

Get used to the clutch. That's the biggest thing I can give you. If you know where the clutch starts to engage, it'll make everything a whole lot easier. Hill starts are a snap if you can keep the clutch in just enough to keep you from rolling back, but not enough to stall. Higher torque does help with this, but it's something you can get used to.

Be glad that you got a manual. It is a much more rewarding car than an auto.

I have got my first gear to about 45, unless im imagining things but i can almost assure you this is where is limits at. anyways...

my dad tought my a very helpful trick. anywhere that there is not moving traffic... sitting still, leave the car in first, and smoothly but quickly let the clutch out until the EXACT moment it catches then quickly push the clutch back in. then keep repeating this, after a TON of times doing this your foot will naturally know how far you can drop the clutch before it starts to catch. this will save you at the green lights that you sit and slowly let the clutch out for 15 seconds before you finally begin to move.

as for starting in second gear, i find it to be very easy and i find it to be sometimes more convinient, although it really serves no purpose and is just harder on the entire drivetrain.
as somebody said (first is first for a reason)

Something must be terribly wrong with your car? Do you have the 5 speed maybe? Because I tested it today and with an engine at 87K I redline at 43MPH...

Well no thats only going to like 6k, Im talking for ordinary driving, I dont wana sound like some hot head teenager redlining my car every time I shift in normal traffic....

At this point Ive gotten the hang of slipping the clutch
, its the whole shifting from first to second thats bugging me because on normal driving first seems to run out really fast unless you redline it.
Who knows maybe the person geared the trans lower or something.
Well on the plus side I have an entire spare engine/clutch/tranny in my garage, but its not like Im destroying the clutch, Im just annoyed at the small first n the first to second gap now.
