Unhappy Being the middle of a sandwich...RX8 meat!

I've had my RX8 for 2 1/2 years... I got sandwiched yesterday morning and I fear it's totaled. Yes, it was silver! lol

Was planning to go the beach, yeah so was the rest of Oregon, got on the freeway and it was standstill traffic. Okay, so I turned around and was going to come home and just play WOW. Well as I was coming back I was stopping at a red light...the lady in front of me looked like she was going to go through the yellow light but instead stopped with her front end over the crosswalk, so I had to stop quicker than I was planning too...then I don't know how many secs passed but I saw out of the corner of my eye in the rear view mirror something massive coming at me, and bam, a huge passenger van (probably circa 1980) plowed into me sending me into the lady in front of me. I hit her so hard that I sent her off into the middle of the intersection. And instead of being pushed forward I actually felt the back of the headrest slam into the back of my head or however it happened. None of my airbags deployed though. Then before I knew it the little old lady driving the Buick in front of me was at my door and so was the guy driving the van. This is where it gets interesting...

This guy is pushing a laminated piece of paper at me saying he'll pay in mumbled english. Don't know where my shoes went but soon enough I was in the street barefoot telling him in spanish to not go anywhere because he started saying in spanish that he had to leave. So then I told him in spanish that I was calling the police. He gave me a wild look and started moving to his van...as I'm trying to call 911 I'm also now yelling at this guy to not go anywhere. Fortunately I was just about 1-2 miles from the closest police station cause they arrived within just a couple of minutes. This crazy guy had gotten into his van and had lied down in the back seat...from what I could see. Also amongst this craziness I noticed that the seam line in the body of my RX8 (I'm not too good at the car technical terms here) running from above the tire to the trunk was wide...probably about an inch or so...everything is a blur now. They made me get back into my car and sit still while they then transferred me to a head brace and all that stuff.

Ended up in the emergency room but luckily I just had a bump on my head from the car seat and also some tenderness in my shoulder. They discharged me pretty quickly but the old guy that was the passenger in the car in front of me was feeling pretty bad so I heard that they were taking him to xray. The nurse had come by and told me that the cops had arrested the guy driving the van for DUI. It never even occured to me that he might be drunk.

So now I'm home waiting to get a rental tomorrow. A friend of mine took me over to the tow yard to see if we could see my RX8 but since it was closed we could only see the front of it. Not really sure what damage is there...I have a really good insurance company (USAA) so they said they'd take care of everything for me. But I was surprised to see that the front of my car had a huge dent on the right side underneath the hood line. Funny enough the van that hit me was sitting next to my car and it had a huge dent in it's big chrome front bumper...so I'm guessing the backside of my car ain't looking too good. I'm going to try to get over there tomorrow with a camera when they're open.

Just what I needed to start off this hot weekend in Oregon! lol

I can't imagine not having an RX8...pretty sure that even if it's totaled I'll just be a getting a newer model. But I'm trying to not to think about that. lol

Not sure why I'm posting all this...guess I needed to vent. I have to say I'm really impressed with the sturdiness of this car in a crash. I was in an accident 10 years ago in my 1996 miata...was just tapped by the car behind me...and I was in alot more pain then than I am in now. I love this car! :D

What you get for buying a Silver!!
But I hear ya.. accidents suck!! But the question is does the guy who hit your rear have insurance. Overall I hope everything works out for ya and you dont have any nagging injuries.

At least you're ok. You'll be back in your 8 (or a new one) soon. Just don't get silver this time. I'm telling you, silver paint is the equivalent of a cloaking device. The Romulans know it. …silver does look good though. Good luck.

Yeah but what I always wondered is, is this silver curse relevant to other cars or is it just silver RX-8's? My brother has a silver 2004 BMW M3 and not a scratch on it.... just a thought

Here is the real reason more silvers seem to be involved in accidents: Most popular colors:

Color Percentage of New Cars
Silver 20.2% popularity of new cars painted silver
White 18.4% popularity of new cars painted white
Black 11.6% popularity of new cars painted black
Med/Dark Gray 11.5% popularity of new cars painted medium or dark gray
Light Brown 8.8% popularity of new cars painted light brown
Med/Dark Blue 8.5% popularity of new cars painted medium or dark blue
Medium Red 6.9% popularity of new cars painted medium red
Med/Dark Green 5.3% popularity of new cars painted medium or dark green
Bright Red 3.8% popularity of new cars painted bright red
Dark Red 0.9% popularity of new cars painted dark red
Source: DuPont Automotive

More Silvers in accidents because there are more Silvers on the road. Or you could subscribe to my Romulan/Predator cloaking device theory.

This theory doesnt work with 8's. Check out which color is most popular with 8's.

Silver isn't the most popular colour with rx8 drivers because the majority of them have been killed or severely injured in their silver 8's.

As a silver owner, I have tried to close my garage door on my 8 (as it was cloaked at the time) and also tried to shear off the driver side rims leaving my driveway (again it was cloaked). So far, it has only cloaked once as I tried to pass a car at many times the limit and was almost forced onto the local golf course.

I think the DSC off switch cloaks the car because I had that off once and I cloaked myself right onto the curb.

LONG LIVE SILVER EIGHT.

Thanks for making me laugh out loud! I never heard of this theory until reading the boards this weekend looking for pics of smashed up RX8s... guess I was blissfully ignorant. lol

We were rearended in my mom's four-week-old silver Tribute in May. The girl insisted she didn't see us!

Sorry to hear about the sandwich Anna.
I always cringe when one of our drivers get their 8's bashed.
At least you're insured by USAA, so you'll get great service!

Hope it all works out well... and fast!

Going to attempt to post pics...first time trying this so we'll see if it works...

Went to the tow yard and took these this morning. Doesn't look as bad as I thought it would...but I'm thinking that they would have to replace 1/2 of the body's sheet metal? I didn't expect to see that pinch next to the tire wells...it's the same on both sides.

I'm having it towed to a place today and they told me they could give me a status tomorrow. It hurts to see my baby like this...lol

Eh, that's not too bad. A competent body shop can fix that so you'll not know anything happened - unless there's some hidden frame damage.

Sorry to hear about the accident - hope everything will turn out fine for you.

Ten bucks says that nimrod in the van doesn't have insurance. I hope USAA is good to you.

As for the pictures, based on your initial description of the accident, I expected much worse. If he hit you as hard as you said he did, kudos to Mazda for building a car that can take a hit so well. Hope you're back on the road soon, and happy to hear that you're OK.

Judging from thr pics, it's not a total.

USAA's Adjusters are pretty well trained, if there is frame damage (which looks like it's not), they will total it.

If it does get totalled, get a beautiful Brilliant Black!

Best of luck!

make sure you push for diminshed value if they do not total the car.
