Best Radar / Lazer Detector for rx8
#2
i have a passport (8500 i think, whatever the top one it) and it is pretty reliable. But my state police don't have legal access to lasers for tagging cars so i couldn't relay its use there. As for fitting well its black and steel gray, matches my black interior perfect

I have some 98$ type I got from Best buy. My friend is a cop and we tested it. It goes off from alittle over 3/4 of a mile. Thats far enough he really wouldn't see me.
BUT you have to remeber smart cops keep the lazer off till they have a target. So if your the only car on the road your toast. If your around others cars you'll pick him up while he is checking the cars infront of you.
Just make sure what ever you get has K and Ka, that what all the cops seem to use now.

Valentine, Escort (Passport) & Bel all make some of the best radar detectors. Remember, you get what you pay for. The distance that a detector picks up radar doesn't vary much between the mid priced units and the premium ones. What you are paying for the ability for the detector to discern between false and true signals.
I use a mid priced Bel unit. It has helped me at times and it has missed a few. It also gets a lot of false X & some K band signals. The only thing you can be sure of are Ka & Laser signals. It missed the truck infront of me getting tagged with Laser but lit up when I got hit and recieved a ticket. I know the truck got hit because the officer told me his, the trucks, speed.
You can also try this for reducing the distance that Laser can pick you up with Veil.

Search noobie. If you had posted in the proper section you'd see that there is even a topic active today.

Also have an Escort 8500. I like it alot. A had two less expensive models (Cobra, Whistler) and returned them because they threw to many false alarms for me. The Escort is certainly more discrete. BTW, most detectors have laser detectors, but they should be called ticket detectors. If they light up and you are speeding, expect blue lights next.

I like my Passport 8500. Works great. Saved me from many a ticket. Just this week it picked up a cop nearly a mile away and gave me plenty of time to get legal. Sure enough, there was a state trooper in the bushes. I just waved and kept on going. The red readout and grey box matches the car and looks natural with the cars grey and black interior.

Valentine One, hands down. Wins just about every comparison test, and ask owners of other brands how they know where the cop is or how many there are. Expensive at $400, but worth it in my opinion.

Hey V-Vette..a better place for that Bel is to be low on your dashboard..just barely above your windshield wipers (I'll try to take a photo of mine later)..it is low enough that it will be discreet, not to mention, it will detect lasers ALOT better since coppers will aim at your license plate (low to your car frame) vs. high to your rearview mirror..basically, by mounting it low, you give your detector a better chance to detect lasers..just food for thought

From the professional who work in this field, they recommended low on the dash, but not obstructed by the windshield wiper or if you have a big hood, etc...not sure if this is a myth for mounting low..but, I'll take the pro's advice and mount mine low..looks slick BTW
