Better city mileage after going on road trip

I apologize for starting another gas mileage thread but I just got back from a road trip this past weekend and something weird is going on.

My destination was about 280 miles north of here. I filled up the tank before I left. Somehow, the tank up didn't make it to 240 miles (in other words I got the same crummy city mileage that I'm used to) which was disappointing to me, and I had to fill up 40 miles short of making it there. That's 240 miles all the way down to below last notch on the gas gozzle...not the point at which the E light came on. I had to fill up 14.5 gallons. Roughly 16.5 highway mpg .

Then on the way back home, I somehow managed to make 280 something miles and filled up again around 14.5 gallons. That came out to roughly 19 mpg. This was the type of mileage I was expecting to get on the way up.

Can someone explain to me why the hell my car's ECU "decided" to screw me over on the way up but not back down?

More importantly...right now I'm still on the first tank of gas I've poured since returning home Sunday, and it's still giving me highway-like mileage even though I haven't driven out on the highway since Sunday. For no good reason I'm at half a tank full and it's at 140 miles somehow, where regularly it'd be at 105 - 115 at half a tank full with city driving. Plus I've been doing my normal city driving routine which consists of lots of WOT action here and there. This just doesn't make sense to me.

It's obvious that the ECU is screwing around with everything...deciding when to run lean and when to run rich. Am I safe to assume that only after going 85 - 95 mph in 6th gear for x amount of hours, the ECU decided to change something?

The reason why I'm posting this is that I know that when this tank is done with, it'll probably go back to it's normal city mpg on the next tank of gas, which is going to **** me off naturally. But I don't understand why we need some goddamn computer to regulate this crap. I'd like to be able to control this or figure out how to manipulate the ECU's actions.

Is a piggyback my only resort?
