Bike Racking

Bike Racking
I hope to buy an '06 soon. I'd also like to be able to put on a bike rack occasionally for transporting 1 or 2 bikes to triathlons later this year. Does anyone have experience with attaching them? Any recommendations as to brand or type of rack to choose? (I have used a strap-on rack on the rear of my 3000GT without a problem for the past year.)

I've used a Yakima strap on rack on the back without problem. There is also a Da'lan hitch available that would allow a hitch mount rack. There have been some issues with folks towing with the hitch but I've not heard of any when using it with a rack.

Yakima also has a roof system avaible the kind where you by the cross bars then you can buy the bike racks or ski racks or what ever kind of rack they have avaible.
What kind of biking do you do road racing or mountain biking??

The Yakima that I was referring to is a strapon the trunktype of rack that I've used to carry two trail bikes. It works ok but I intend to get a hitch mount sometime down the road just because its so much easier to put on an off. I find myself taking one of my other cars (which has a hitch) more often, just because I'm too lazy to deal with the straps, even though I'd rather be driving the RX8

lol... when I first got the 8 (after I traded in the tacoma with the rack on it) a friend of mine was joking that I'd have to get something similar so I could strap our kayaks to the roof... this just reminded me of that

Thanks for the info. I currently use a Saris Bones for my GT. Been using it for 1.5 years with no problems. It's a hatch mount (straps). But I wasn't sure if I wanted to hook up my (future) RX8 with it. I'll be using if for up to 2 bikes at a time or up to 2 snowboards (if possible). Guess I have a bit more strategizing to do.

Okay, that's settled thanks for the links Low Fly'n 8. Now I'm curious: Where do you do triathlons rip0219? I did the Cayuga Lake Triathlon in Ithaca, NY last summer:

I haven't been ambitious enough to search for a bike rack yet (the season seems way off when it is 0F on a January morning).
I expect the bike rack to be a lot easier than laying the mountain bike down in the hatch of the Subaru station wagon.

hey i'm a USAT member myself....I use the saris bones 2 bike version. it's rock solid. there's no way i'm bolting on a hitch . no need for it. and I have the OEM rear wing, it clears it just fine.

and p.s. if you use your 8 to get to races, look up some seatshields.

I currently use the Yakima Q-tower and Q-clip system. A bit pricey, but it fits like a charm....

I was looking at a rear rack..I do lots of mtb and cyclocross racing but coolbluedad says..why can't we do this in style!
MTBR has some really good reviews http://www.mtbr.com/reviews/Bike_Rac...ct_78464.shtml on the Saris Bones..and that is at the top of my options list.
Any Saris users here report any damage to their rear bumpers (scratches or otherwise)? Also, Saris only recommends that it is used on metal bumpers as opposed to plastic or foam which ours our made of, right?
Going on the yakima and thule sites..if you try to enter an 8 into the rack chooser app they do not offer a rear rack that fits. Yakima says the 8 is "unyakable" and Thule just offers a hitch rack.
TIA

It works pretty well, all in all.

I will be using the same Yakima Q system as I did on my old Protege 5. The attachements are easy to use and the locking system is pretty sound. I use the rack both for hauling 4 snowboards or two bikes.
