Blind Spot
#26
twisty, do a search on rear view mirror and pivot. There was a HUGE thread on it where everyone was bashing everyone. lol Somehow, almost nobody knew there were 2 pivot points. In any car I get into, my first move is to advust the mirror so it is all the way up then i adjust the angle and such. Even when i test-drove the 8, I did the same thing. Must be instinctual.

Of course there are drivers that will turn their head to look out the rear-side or back window (I've seen some people on the road turn their bodies too!). I've seen so many people check their blind spots like this and not see the car in front putting on the brakes and WHAM, accident. If you adjust your mirrors properly and use the mirrors for lane changes, highway merges etc. you will always have your eyes out front to see what's happening there. It seems people are afraid to trust their mirrors because of this whole blindspot thing and turn their head by habit.
I forgot about reversing, yes the *** is high on the car and makes it difficult to judge the extremeties but it comes with practice. You will learn the distances just like you learned how far the nose extends in the front even though you can't see it.

Insanely Yellow
Spinnin' again:
Thanks for taking the child who started this thread to task for acting like an ******* with his car ... I can tell that you must be a special kind of driver ... one who had the cojones to buy the Lightning Yellow!
We LY boys need to stick together ...
We should call a national meetup!

I kept cranking the mirrors out a little more and I think I've finally got it right. Backing out of a parking space scares the crap out of me 'cause I can't just sweep back with the mirrors to see everybody behind me like my old car. I go really slow out of parking spots now.

If we're talking about what you can see when you turn your head to the left with the B-pillar there, it seems taller drivers or people who recline the seat more so that the seatback is behind the pillar see more clearly. Shorter drivers and people who like to sit more upright will be even or in front of the pillar, which causes it to block your view.
There's another special situation where the thick C-pillar on the passenger side gets in the way. This is at mall parking lots that have a road that circles the perimeter of the mall. If leaving the parking aisle and trying to get onto the "circle" road, when the parking aisle doesn't intersect the circle road at 90 degrees but rather bends farther to the left at the point of intersection, I can not see ANYTHING that's coming at me from the right side. That is very frustrating and scary.

Let that be a great big duh! for me.
I got my 8 back from the brake pad replacement last night and adjusted like so - I had never noticed the second pivot. Much better.

The one on the back side of the mirror is the one to use for adjusting the RV so you can see out the back window.
The other pivot point is where the post comes out of the windshield bracket. Swivel the whole post upwards. That way the RV won't block your view to the right.

Car Talk has the answer!
I used to have blind spot problems in my RX-7s, my wife's Miata (top up only), and the RX-8. Like others, I previously adjusted my side mirrors to barely see the side of my car. Click and Clack of CarTalk fame offer a solution that has worked very well for me -- adjust the mirrors so there is just a tiny bit of overlap with the inside mirror. See http://www.cartalk.com/content/featu...ors/index.html for details.

The only really pronounced one is when I am trying to back out of an angled parking spot, the pillar for the back suicide door is directly in the way of seeing on coming traffic, so once I am 25% out there is no way to know if more traffic is coming... So I just hope they see me backing out, and no pedestrians jump in the way, cause I can't see them for a second or so.

Maybe I'm the only one
I can't park my 8 without backing into a parking spot. I find it impossible.
What works for me, backing up in any direction, is hitting the mirror adjustment thing so that it looks almost straight down (until i can easily see the door handles in the reflection. Then, once the door handle starts to "overlap" the curb I'm backing into, I know I'm perfectly parked, and I stop. Also, I use this to line up with parking lines. And I can do it very quickly now, enough to scare passengers. Works like a charm!
Anyone else use this technique?

I have to back my car into the garage and get very very close to the shelving units there in order for my car and my hubby's Magnum to fit in there (new houses these days = teeny tiny garage). I too tilt my right mirror all the way down and way far in so I have a good angle of my rear tire end so I don't scrape a shelf!
At any rate, I am 5'2" and have issues backing out and with the blind spot changing lanes. I've tried the idea of angling the mirrors out more and I just can't get used to it. I like the "baby step" idea and will try it though! Little more out each way!
