If you didn't use your signal, then yes. It'll go up.

If you did, it'll be impossible to prove it not, it'll still go up. You could probably plead a case with the insurance, but it's not likely it'll work.

i cant stand when people change lanes or turn without using a goddamn signal. that is what they are there for.

i nearly had some ******* crash into me earlier. he just drifted into my lane without using a turn signal. dumbass. didnt even check if it was open. which it wasnt. he would have clipped my front end, from the tire forward.

imo, whether or not one uses turn signals is a marker of what kind of driver they are.

Where you located? I'm too lazy to look at your posts. I know California lets one go to traffic school every 18 months so it won't affect your record/insurance rates.

You could try going to court to see if the cop shows up and if so, plead guilty and go to traffic school.

Hey Its a cop, 90% of the time there is nothing you can do about it, Judge will ALWAYS believe then first.

for NYC, this WILL make your insurance go up. its not a major violation. but yes it will go up.

You can take a shot and see if the cop shows up, Im not sure how Texas works but in NYC, the department will PAY the cop to go to court.

if he shows up, nothing you can do about it. just pled guilty and pray that on the way out he gets hit by a bus.

Yes, I hate people who dont signal when switching lanes. but I also hate cops, 99% of them (I have cop friend too, even he said cops are ********, they LOVE to pick on people with nice cars. and they LOVE to see that "You cant do **** about it" facial expression. professionals my ***!)

AWESOME... for all the people telling me to use a turn signal.

and a true thank you to those contributing,

and just BY THE WAY, i was taughtt to look in your mirrors before you do anything, if someone is there signal, if someone isn't dont. this way i always check my mirrors before i decide i need to signal or not.

and if you actually read the post, i said i checked to see if anyone was behind me.

cop thought i was a rich kid, simple as that...BUT IM NOT.

ok so im thinking my best bet is to show up to court, what i don't understand is, will all of this take place in 1 trial thingy?

nycgps what do you mean take a shot?

Shoulder check?

There are some blind spots. Apparently the cop saw you not signal, so someone was "There" so your method fails.

Signal if you can see someone, or if you can't. Doesn't matter what you were taught, you were taught wrong.

I was trying to say you can try to show up in court and see if the cop shows up.

and also, You should signal everytime.

it doesnt matter if there is anybody around you, what if he/she is in your blind spot? what if she is maybe 2 lanes on your right ? you simply cant see it.

I know its not a cure for everything, but better than not doing anything, right ?

You were taught wrong. time to change that "signal only if you see something" habit.

Ive gotten a TON of tickets so far (4 so far in less than a year) in Texas. If your still a teen there might be some type of "Teen Court" in which your insurance won't go up but your given community service hours. If they dont offer that you can take defensive driving once a year and that wont go on your insurance either since its a moving violation. Or you can take probation which wont go on your record but you will have to pay like the ticket almost in full and you cant get a ticket in the same city (usually... could be county or state where you live) for 3-6 months. Mine was 6 months (Im still on it) because im under 18.... goodluck... O and if you want to take the case to court please not guilty and the judge will set you up with a court date asking if you want your case to be in front of him or a jury, hopefully the officer will not show.... Goodluck and use those turn signals...

WTB explained it right. Take it to court, if the cop shows up, elect defensive driving.

Don't pay the ticket. The cost of your insurance going up will far outweigh the cost of the court fees and the class. It's a moving violation, and you will pay dearly for it in increased premiums.

Don't be like the idiots out there. Use your gawdamn turn signals regardless of if anybody is around. That little rule you made up in your head is ridiculous.

You should actually maintain awareness of your surroundings...not just look to see if anyone is there when you decide to do something. The 8's blind spots have made me rather aware of that, and I've been sharpening my skills over the past few years.

You're supposed to signal whether or not someone is there. I remember the NY driver's manual having a statement like "...even on a seemingly deserted road."

Personally, I don't mind people who see a good opening and blast into it without signalling but without getting in anyone's way. What gets to me are the people who don't signal when a signal would be useful information to others, and those who think signalling gives them the right of way.

The officer was being nice to you.

Think about what you did................

You accelerated too fast leaving the parking lot.

Do you want a careless or wreless driving ticket?

+1. Using the signal is not an automatic delimiter of right-of-way. If you hit your signal and then plow into the car next to you, your still at fault. If they manage to avoid you, then your ego and sense of superiority must have been gratified, and it will unfortunately encourage you to do this again. The signal has 2 meanings. One is a request for clearance, the other is a notification of intentions. If everything isn't clear, it should never be taken as a demand.

That being said, I'll admit, I am terrible when it comes to signaling in general. Specifically when there is no one to notify. If my impending actions will affect someone, I do signal. And being under the potential observation of a law enforcement officer is certainly enough reason to notify.

...unless I am driving around DC. Sorry guys, but signaling down in/around DC is a good way to never get anywhere. Let your intentions be known, and a million drivers will do everything they can to thwart you.

OP, the cop hated how you took the turn. He probably didn't have enough to charge you with speeding or reckless driving, but he certainly noticed the lack of signal, and because he couldn't get you for how you took the turn, he nailed you with the signal ticket. Can't complain.

I'm a personal fan of....when someone SLAMs on the brakes and then half way through the turn/lane change you see the signal come on.
