Bought an RX8!
Yesterday I picked up a brand new 2007 Grand Touring Galaxy Gray RX8. Although there was few hoops to jump through I ended up being very happy with the service from the sales people at the dealer. Here are the specs:
2007 Grand Touring
Galaxy Gray
Black Leather
Appearance Package
Rotary Accent Package
Sirius Sat Radio
Moonrood Wind Deflector (might take this off)
Spoiler
Manual Transmission (of course!)
I really didn't want all the extra stuff, I just wanted the Grand Touring, but they took the cost of the Appearance Package, which was the most expensive, as a further discount off the car so I decided, what the hell. The chances of me finding another 2007 Grand Touring in the color I wanted were slim.
Having read about it on these forums, I asked the dealer to turn on the Autolock feature of the Advanced Keyless Entry. Some of the sales people didn't even know about it, but thought it was cool and are going to have it activated in their vehicles.
I was surprised by this, but the dealer fills the tires with Nitrogen (NitroFil) on all their new cars. Not sure if I'll keep doing this, I have to do some research.
On the 40 mile drive back from the dealer I was careful to vary the speed and shift early. I did get a taste of the poor gas mileage though when I noticed my tank had dropped by a quarter when I arrived home. Still, I was prepared for that, again thanks to all the information available here. I believe it will get a little better, but either way, I made the decision to buy the RX8 being fully aware of the pretty terrible gas mileage.
I was very tempted by the Mazdaspeed 3. That explosive power is quite addictive. It was a great car, but when I climbed back into the RX8 after driving the MS3, I knew the RX8 was the car I wanted. My wife took one look at the MS3 and told me it was the same as my old car (Protege 5). Of course, to me they were quite different, but from her perspective, I may as well just keep the old one! Apparently 130 HP vs 263 HP doesn't mean anything to my wife.
So thanks to everyone who responded to my questions about the price the dealer was offering.
Time to go for a drive. Got to get past the break in period so I can really wind it out.

1935 lbs. FTW!
Congrats, don't worry about the fuel economy it does improve as you drive. When I got mine new I was around 15 mpg city and it went to about 17 and then leveled off there. Also the gas needle is not consistent, the first quarter lasts a little while then it plummets to half then stays on half forever then plummets to 1/4 or less.

Congratulations!
I'm with you on this:
Low, wide(ish), firmly planted, rear wheels driving the show... THAT'S a real car (nothing wrong with the MS3, but you get what I mean)
... and like ComsosMpower says, don't trust the gas gauge. The first quarter reads "gone!" as soon as you drive 10 feet... and then it sticks to the last quarter for eternity.

Just got back from a drive. It's even better the next day!
I loved opening the garage and seeing that long sleek hood stretching back to the steeply raked windshield. As my wife says, "it looks like it's angry all the time".
Maybe it's just the new car halo, but it's fun to drive even keeping it under 4,000 rpm and babying it. I can't wait to really push it!
Just drove around for about 45 minutes, no radio, just listening to the engine. I know I'm just kidding myself, but I feel like I'm driving an F1 car (hey, after driving a Protege for five years, it's not surprising).

Yeah, I'm tempted to remove it. Even the dealer said she doesn't normally recommend people buy the deflector. I'll experiment and see what I like better.

Yeah defintely. But it was more than that too. The gear shift, seating position, just how the car felt overall is different. The RX8 just felt effortless, where as the MS3 felt wild and crazy but ultimately a Mazda 3 underneath.

Congrats, Tid. I went to the dealer to look at the MS3 also, but the 8 in the showroom kept my attention. As soon as I can find the apparently rare combination of Phantom Blue/Sand Leather/MT, I'll buy.
