Break in Question

Still in the process of breaking in 8, and tonight I have to use the interstate to get to work, how much variation do I need in my speed, (ie. is chaning from 65 to 60 enough) and my rpm's, and how often do I need to change my speed.

Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Normal interstate driving in some traffic should be sufficient. I think the break in is only 600 miles and it goes by quickly.

Basically you don't want to travel at a set speed for long durations. If your ride is under a 1/2 hour don't worry about it too much. If it's over an hour every now and then slow a bit, drop a few gears and get back to speed.

Some people take the break-in too seriously. As long as you let the engine warm up to normal temp (oil, not coolant) and don't rev the crap out of it you'll be fine. Once it's warm breif runs though the RPM range is a good exercise.

Kewl, it's about a 15 minute drive so I guess I should be fine as long as I don't rev it up constantly, I've been trying to keep it under 5000 rpm's all the time too except for one slip up shifting from 5th to 4th shot it up there quite a bit ::cringes::

Dont worry about it. If you spent all your time revving high and abusing it, worry. If you ocasionally rev it up, nothing bad will happen. Trust me, I know

After the first 100 miles going above 5000 is fine. Just don't do it all the time. A quick run up to 8000 in first and second gear on a warm engine is actually a good thing. Just don't do drag race starts or slam gears.

Climb the RPM range briskly to about 5000 then a breif WOT to 8000. The key is not to do that repeatedly.

Make sure you drive the car as you would normally. The manufacturers do miles on the engine in the factory now so they have been running anyway. Dont be scared to rev your car, if you dont the car can become lazy, these engines like to rev that is what they are designed to do. Make sure the engine is at operating temp though.

Okay good, it shot up there to about 8. But it was only once and will be the last time till 600 miles have gone by. I'm probably being a little overly cautious considering most of the time I stay at 4 unless I need a little extra to pass somebody, but better safe than sorry, and it'll be so worth it when I finally get to let it all the way out. :D

Unless you own a Porsche 911 or similar vehicle, the only break-in your engine received at the factory is the time it took to drive your car onto the car carrier...

Genom,
Can you explain why nothing bad will happen?
Thanks.

The manual says "Don’t race the engine."

What does that mean? like reving the engine in neutral?

Here's my explainations...

If you baby the engine too much it won't get a chance to fully break in. If you beat on it you can stress the engine and get premature failures or wear. Drive it resonable with a few runs through the revs on a warmed engine will allow the engine to break in across the RPM band. As far as I know the rotary doesn't need to break in the same as a piston engine.

I'm still in the breaking-in process myself. I'm trying to keep it under 6500 RPMs until I hit 600 miles. Takes lots of self discipline.

It's like dating a supermodel and limiting yourself to just holding hands. I can't wait to take her all the way.

I know cause I had no problems with this. Wghile in my breakin I revved it up to redline a few times, and from a LOT of experienced people I have spoken to locally, as well as on the forum, this is not a problem. Thats why the manual says there really isnt a breakin period, just take it easy the first 600 miles. After that, go nuts.

Redlining it is good every so often to help prevent carbon deposits from acumulating. There's been hundreds of discussions about this that go into way mroe detail than I can give. Look for them on the fiurm using the search and you'll see what I mean.

Do like I did. Drive your first 600 miles in 2 or 3 days. Then you're good to go
