Buying a new 8

Hey guys, new to the forum here looking to buy an RX8. I have found a good deal locally, and wanted to know what type of things I should look out for when buying a 2004 model. The car has been driven about 100k but the engine was just replaced, does this mean the tranny was too?

Also how much does it cost to replace the clutch/tranny? Just wanted some input on what type of things I should look out for specifically this car/model/year.

Wise choice. Make sure that you read this thread:

https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-forum-197/new-potential-owners-start-here-202454/

and the FAQs.

Having a dealer replace the clutch runs in the range of $1200 or more. With the engine changed at 100k, it's likely the original owner sprang for a new clutch. It would have been just the cost of the parts, saving a bunch on labor. Check the service records for what was done. You've already seen the service record saying that the engine was replaced, right?

It's not common to replace the transmission, and it's definitely not part of the engine replacement warranty. Transmissions in the 8 tend to last OK if they're not abused and if the correct gear oil is used.

The safest way to check the car out is to take it to a good Mazda dealer. Have them look up its service record - they'll have access to anything ever done at Mazda dealers. Include a compression check along with the usual used car once-over. Make sure it has the MSP16 flash.

Hope it checks out OK...the 8 is one of the most fun cars out there.
