Buying an RX-8 this week
Hey guys,
I am about to purchase my RX-8 this week, and I just have questions. I am buying a 2006 GT with 7,100 miles. The car was bought 5 months ago by an unknown customer, and it's going to be mine soon. I searched the recall information, and it said it effected the 2004's/2005's/and early 2006's.
Before I take the car home, should I ask them to do an inspection of the car (due to the recall) or since its on their lot, did they already do that? I tried searching for the recall information, but didn't find any real in depth explinations. I think the recall effects all years, including the 2006. Should I wait for the "recall letter" in the mail, or ask them on the spot?
I'm sorry if this has been posted 100 times before, but i tried searching for it, but came up with nothing. This is one of my first real posts, and I hope to join as an active member of the community.
Again, this forum has been a blessing when searching for information and answers about the RX-8. When going to the dealership, I knew more information about maintenecnce and about the rotary engine than the dealer did. Thanks again for the information this site has provided me, and I hope I will have my car by the end of this week.
Also, I just checked and the vin on the car does fall in the range of recalls.

Are you buying it from a Mazda dealer? If so, I would ask (after price is negotiated, etc) for a report showing that the recent recal work has been completed (and that it passed the tests, not needing a new engine). I was told by my Mazda service rep (although the guys on here I am sure would know better than my rep does) that the recall work catches up the computer on all updates.

^^ditto. You can't expect dealerships to go out of their way to do work on cars sitting in the lot. They're usually busy enough. Have it done before you sign the final paperwork. The last thing you need is to buy a car and have it sit for a week getting an engine before you can drive it!

Wow, thanks a lot for the quick responses!!
Yes, I am buying it from a dealer in chicago. I have been to a local BBQ with people from these boards, and I have to say, it was a blast.
Anyways, I will make sure I will ask them to do a full service check on the car before I sign the papers. Honestly, I brought the recall up when I went to the dealership my first time, and the stupid sales person knew nothing of it. He printed up a carfax report, and told me that there was no recalls out on the car, which doesn't really help me out much :\
PS: I am a young'n, only 17 years old Don't blow your horns at me, saying I shouldn't deserve a car like this! I have been working at UPS for over a year, making my own money, ect. My grandma passed away, and left all of her grandchildren some money, and I have been fascinated with cars almost my whole life. I have been researching this car even before I registered a name on this forum, and finally decided that I want this car.
Well thanks again for the input. My dad knows squat about cars, especially the RX-8, so I am doing my own research, trying to get a good deal and also making sure I know how to maintain the car when I get it. I just need to find the money to get some all-weather tires before the Chicago winter hits in

As long as you take car of the rotary and respect it it's ok. I am 16 and my Rx-7 is my world. Never raced it on the streets and I plan to keep it that way. Ask the dealer fo records on the recal or the tests and recal work done at signing. You'll love it.

Yeah, when I get the car, my life will revolve around it also No more food/drinks allowed!! I also have to teach my dad how to drive stick, because I am going off to college in a year, and we wants to drive it when im gone. I had my lisence for almost two years, and I have never gotten a ticket or have gotten into an accident. That is partially the reason my parents are letting me buy this car, because of my grades/driving record.
On a different note, I want to get into autocross/circuit racing close to Chicago. I do not know if you need to be a certain age (18) or if you need certain insurence coverage (one of my friend's parent brought that up). Also, is there any "High Performance" driving schools in the area, to lower my insurence, and get me comfertable for track racing?
