Buying a Used Rx8

Ok I have a few final questions before I get a 8. I narrowed down to two choices.

a. private gt vr blk/rd lthr 30k 2nd owner paint job (by first owner) asking for 17500
b. very small dealer gt vr blk/rd lthr 27k 1st owner (I think) asking for 18000

1 Any suggestion on the price I should offer?

2 I am kinda ify about 2nd owner/paint job combo or the small dealership so i was wondering should I have a shop check out the car?(havent carfaxed them yet but i will, lets assume that it is car from major accidents/salvage title) if so

a. Who should i go to? Firestone? Midas? or Mazda Dealer?
b. Can shops like Firestone or Midas even do engine check on the rx8?

3 I am going to buy the car from another state. So all if have to do is pay for the car get the Owner Certificate, then go back to my own state and pay for everything else right?

4 Also i was wondering how much extended warranty cost/last? I went to mazda website they had several opinions but no price. I used the search function of the fourm and it turned out a whole page of crap x.x.

Answer what you can, thank you for your time.

Future rx8 owner.

Purchase through the dealer. See if they will offer you a limited bumper to bumper warranty through them (normally it's like 3 months / 3,000 miles). With a private party if something goes wrong, then you're normally SOL.

1. Carfax both cars. You're making purchase with something over $17k, extra $30 is not going to hurt.

2. Paint job could mean something as small as scratches or some type of accident (unless the owner doesn't like the original color & repaint it to different color). Also, cheap paint job doesn't last as long as the original. Not worth the $500 saving over the dealer price.

3. Take the car to Mazda dealer (or if you know any good shop) and have the car check up before you buy. Mazda dealer can also check and see if all the warranty work has been done to the car.

If you are buying it in a different state, it usually works that they will make you pay the state tax in the state you are buying the car and state tax in the state you will register. However, a lot of states will give you a credit toward the tax you paid in the state you bought it in. For example, if you buy a car in state A and pay $250 in taxes, state B will give you a credit of $250 toward any tax you owe in that state. Title and registration I would do in the state you reside from the start, but that usually means that you will have to do it on your own. A dealer will not usually be able to title and register a car for you in another state.

My other suggestion when looking for a used car would be to check with Carmax. If you have a Carmax close to you, it is a good deal. You can actually do a search online to see what they have at every location, and they can even transfer cars from one location to another for you. They also guarantee a clean history. If anything, this will give you an idea of what a used RX-8 is going for in your area to get the best price possible even if you do not buy it from Carmax.
