Someone that's not you, you mean? Oh, I see, it's a great thing until YOU have to start paying taxes, sell your car, etc. over an unproven and hyped-up hypothesis.

Gas taxes pay for roads, and northern states need allot of road work.
China will never stop with their countries industrial growth. So who cares?

Well, you're right, I'm only 18 and am still under my parents wing so I wouldn't be paying this "tax." However in South Carolina we receive no emissions tax like this.

But I believe it's more than an unproved and hyped-up hypothesis. Quick Example: all the natural diasters occuring recently with increasing intensity an duration-result of global warming. If you had any knowledge of weather patterns you would know that with warmer ocean temperatures comes more powerful hurricanes, i.e. Katrina. 2006 and 2005 I believe were both the hottest years on record, with 1998 I think being the third. Polar ice caps are melting faster and faster every year. Ok thats like three.

Call it human induced or not, global warming is occurring.

Oh, so you're a climatologist?

Notice how all cited "evidence" of global warming is in the last decade or so. Ten years, out of 4000+ of human existence alone. I have seen way too many politicians and activists waving their hands about this more than I've seen anyone proving that it actually exists. I have, however, seen solid evidence that it doesn't exist.

And lets pretend that it does exist, even though I remain completely unconvinced that it does. Attacking the automobile will be as effective as closing all the windows on the Titanic. You could junk every car on the planet and it'd barely put a dent in greenhouse gases, because cars aren't the primary producer of CO2 and CO2 isn't even the main greenhouse gas, methane is.

I like your attitude though, that global warming is a huge problem that someone besides you should pay for. Brilliant.

Emissions tax is an absurd idea. Just like the notion of buying "carbon offsets". Its basically an excuse for rich elitists like Al Gore to be able to continue their extravagant and environmentally wasteful lifestyle while assuaging their "guilt" over it.

At the same time, the "little people" like us are lectured and told that we are the problem. From the elitist point of view, we should all be herded on mass transit like the sheep we are. Driving should be reserved for those who know better like Gore and his ilk, government bureaucrats and rich liberals.

And what better way to control us then with punitive taxation like an emissions tax. Unless China's 1 billion people, or the hundreds of millions of people in other developing third world countries get in on the act, any emissions tax in the UK or US will accomplish nothing from an environmental perspective. It is merely a tool for political control and manipulation of the masses.

And I have news for you. The earth has been around for a looooooong time. Hurricanes like Katrina have occured before and will occur again. Freak weather has been around for years before man kept records of it and will occur long after we are gone. The Earth also goes through cycles of warming and cooling that are perfectly natural. Volcanoes alone easily contribute more in emissions than all the automobiles on the Earth combined.

The environmental movement is akin to a religion that encourages the worst kind of pseudo-science and superstitious belief. Every weather event that seems in any way unusual is attributed to global warming, but other events, like the fact that last year had no major destructive hurricanes, are conveniently ignored because they don't fit the pattern. Its like reading a vague horoscope and then believing its an accurate predictor of the future because some random event happens that seems to fit what the horoscope said.

Besides if it makes you feel better, petroleum based fuels won't be used 50 years from now, guaranteed. Its only a matter of time before oil effectively runs out, or a much cleaner energy source is used such as hydrogen.
