Every state/country has it's own laws, but here in California, they can't charge you for anything that you have not authorized. We have the BAR, Bureau of Automitve Repair here in CA who govern these things, and have strict guidelines on getting cutomer approval. You don't owe them for anything you didn't approve. By the way, you don't have to change an air filter in order to move a car, and it certainly does not take 4 weeks to do the repairs you mentioned. Maybe 4 days and that is if the shop is very busy.

I wanted to store my car for the winter (Nova Scotia, Canada). I had it in heated storage for a week, went in to start it and it wouldn't start. Towed it to the dealership (Steele Mazda, Portland St, Dartmouth, NS). They told me it was ignition coils and wiring that needed to be replaced. They also said it was covered under my warranty, or service package or something that had been switched over to my name from the previous owner. Anyway, 2 weeks since they told me that i called to see if the car was ready, they said it was up on the hoist. Two more weeks later, still not having heard from Mazda i called them back today. A guy in their service department told me that the ignition coils were replaced and that was covered under warrenty (saved me about 500$, sweet....but) now he tells me the sparkplug wiring wasn't covered and that cost me about 80$, annnnd it needed a new air filter or something which cost something like 260$. They did all the work without telling me what i'd have to pay. They say that they tried to get a hold of me but the fact of the matter is that they didn't. I had no missed calls from them on my cell phone and no messages on the answering machine. But they did the work and are now flipping me the bill. I said i didn't tell them to do the work that would cost me all that money. The shop guy said that they needed to do it to move it out of the bay. I said they could've just pushed it out, i mean, come on, it was pushed in. Anyway, the shop guy got all agitated and told me 'The fact of the matter is we needed to do the work to move the car, if you have a problem take it up with the Service Manager! *CLICK*"....HE HUNG UP ON ME!!! professional or what???

Anyway, this is my first real post i think. This site rocks, I was just looking for your opinions on this. Thanks!

PS - i called back and spoke with the General Manager about this. He said he's going to look into it and get back to me shortly. I don't think i should have to pay for work i never knew needed to be done to the car and was done without my knowledge.

hey me again, update:

ok in the end the GM of Steele Mazda covered all the costs of the work that was done without my approval. don't quote me on the cost of the air filter or whatever it was, i could be wrong about the details when i typed it earlier but i didn't get the details because of the guy having hung up on me. Anwho, i did have to pay about 80$ to get the heater fixed (that too was fked up for some reason), and since they hadn't already done the work on it before all this drama, i paid for it like normal. I just drove my car to where i'm storing it. I let it run for about 15mins beforehand to let it warm up. By the end of the drive, about 30mins of the car running, the heater still didn't work. I'm gonna try it again tomorrow but i'm not geting my hopes up. They're all useless at Steele Mazda in dartmouth....but mannnn do i ever love my car.
