Yes, a used RX-8 is a good tuner car (if the engine is solid) but the guy I know with the Mazsport kit bought his 8 new in 07' and since has spent probably 10-15k on it and I just think thats nuts for a car that is not that fast. My opinion of course.

/\ the other point here is that the 8 is such a great looking car that handles like a dream . To make it quick as well makes it a way better car than something that may handle and be quick but looks like a brick.
Another thing to consider is that even though you may have bought your 8 new - the cost of upgrading it after you have owned it a few years is way less than trading it in on the next hot grocery getter ...

First off, a lot of benchracing in here. Most people have never been in a turbo 8 so yeah.
Secondly, whatever a Magazine tests a car at, add AT LEAST 0.5-1.0 seconds to the 1/4 mile time. They "speed shift" the trans and generally beat the **** out of the car. Most "normal" drivers lack A) The skill to drive like that, and B) Even if they COULD, they wouldn't because the car isn't a loaner. Think rental.
Thirdly, I walk on stock STi's and Evo's at 9psi. I've never launched on one but from a roll a turbo 8 is very potent. I've had a few modded STi's (including one that puts down 360ish ahwp) play around with me and I keep up no prob.
Stock, STi's and Evo's don't put down a whole lot (between 240 and 250 MAX). They have AWD, saps power.

Actually GO to a drag race (one with a "test and tune" session) sometime and then come back here and tell me how many Sti's you saw running low/mid 13's. It wont be many, if any.
Im no drag race aficionado by ANY means but for **** sake, i have been to a few and if u just go u will see for yourself.

On your second point, I quoted R&T. It's a well known fact that they dont speed shift and will not drive the car so hard during testing that it will render the car inoperable. I trust that. Can't say the same for any other magazines.
They quoted a 13.5 @ 107 for the GTO. After a few passes at the drag strip, I was able to duplicate that time and trap almost exactly. Can't say the same for the RX8's, because they aren't enough people who drag race them. The 14.5 @ 95 they got seems to be mark for the stock 8, and very few have hit that. I did some research over on NASIOC and those guys have posted plenty of time slips showing 13.1 - 13.3 for stock STi's trapping between 101-103mph.
Id like to know if you have one slip to back up what you're saying, unless you have a video somewhere. Just show me a slip that says your car traps 112 mph. I'd believe you can walk all over most modded STi's from a roll. Heck, show one that says you trapped 105mph. That should be easy for your car. It would be enough to beat a stock STi from a roll.

the greddy kit was the first turbo setup to come out over 5 years ago....we now have the MM upgrade kit available, or the esmiril, among others, each of which can get you close to 400whp. The STI still weighs 250 or so more pounds. A stock STI? please....
A well-tuned turbo 8 is a force to be reckoned with....I surprised by how many people don't give it the credit it deserves.
PS- the STI is a box. blah.

I have a couple problems with this since you're playing the benchracing card...

N/A with minimal bolt-ons I trapped 92 mph, oh wells. I haven't been to the track with my 8 yet after putting the turbo on. Mainly I'm afraid launching from a dig will implode the weak *** factory trans.
And I don't go video taping my races around like a kid in high school, mostly because I don't go "prowling" for races. They come to me and are rather impromptu. You can ask another member on this forum about me walking on a modded STi on the highway just 2 weeks ago- he was following me in his car.
I've also been the track (back when I was NA) and haven't seen too many STi's or Evo's break 12's up here. A few run high 13's, most stockers in the heat and 1,000ft+ elevation (not much) run bottom 14's.
I put down more power than a stock STi or Evo @ 9psi and weight less, so yeah. But then again, I didn't build my car to impress others, so if you don't believe me, whatever.

Friday Night Drags at Firebird Internation Raceway test and tune. $20. Race. Get slip. I don't care what your time is... launch as soft as you want to not break anything. I just want to know the trap speed.
I will send you the $20 when you post your slip.

This thread is just
I will say 2 things:
1. Turbo rotaries, especially RX8s, do not get enough respect.
2. People willing to race their STIs will generally not be stock. There is every incentive to mod the STI, be it GD or GR.

Big fan? Obviously not, because if you actually went to drag races you would see Sti's running 14's all day long. I saw it at 3 drag race events i went to in 2008. Do you people actually ever GO to drag races? Judging by the responses i would say no. Same old same old 8 owners talking from they asses and from a magazine article and not from witnessing it with their own eyes.

Firebird will not let me run my car. Tech ****'s. Speedworld should, but they have stiffened up their tech standards.
Actually, I think some people are heading up to Speedyworld next weekend, so I may go.
And I WILL be launching like a grandma, lol

RX8 with mazsport kit barely beating a 240 with a stock SR20DET.

Second, the SR20DET has to be tuned in order to run, and there's no way someone goes through the effort to install a JDM-only engine, and tunes it to just .7.5 lbs of boost. It's making 14 lbs at least.
Third, most people building a 240 have also done limited slip differentials and performance tires, typically for drifting. That's decent traction right there in a 300 WHP car which weighs probably less than an RX-8.

Mazdamaniac's RX-8 will lay waste to a stock STI, 09 or any other year. It spools quick and hard, and he's got the tires to put the grip down on the ground. Watch Jeff's video of him pulling a 300+ Mustang on the racetrack at Firebird.
I've driven his car, I've driven stock STIs, and I've driven an 08 STI making 400whp. Jeff's car is how Mazda should have delivered them...
BTW-Anyone turboing their RX-8 should change the final drive to 4.10 if they want a better trap speed in the 1/4 mile. 4.44 is too low... too many shifts required. That's why the Honda S2000 posts a slightly better 1/4 mile time than the RX-8 does.
Now on a racetrack, where you're going fast for more than a few laps, this is where the RX-8 shines. It carries a higher cornering speed than a stock Evo or STI. This is why the SCCA classifies them as being in the SAME CLASS as a stock Evo or STI, both of which come with STICKY track tires as stock. Our RX-8 comes with consumer-grade high-mileage all-season sport tires. There's a HUGE difference in grip between our stock tires, and the Evo and STI stock tires. If those companies has shipped those two cars with the all-season sport tires we've got, their 0-60 and 1/4 mile times would be much higher.
My car, with the lighter Enkei wheels, lighter brake rotors, light flywheel, and sticky Bridgestone RE01Rs is damn fast even just N/A. From a standing start, it sucks, but will still accelerate as hard as a 300 horsepower Lexus IS350. Granted, I'm not close to stock.
Jeff's car leaves mine for dead. From a standing start or on a roll. Just kills me, and I'm probably doing a 5.7 second 0-60 time. I have no interest in drag racing... track use is where the RX-8 is king!

Mods, in order of importance for the RX-8:
1. Lightweight wheels
2. sticky tires (Yokohama Advan Neovas or Bridgestone RE01Rs, or the new RE11s)
3. lightweight flywheel
4. lightweight brake rotors
5. turbo
If youv'e done the turbo first, you're wasting power spinning heavy parts. Lightweight parts really make the RX-8 shine!
BTW-I outran an 04-06 GTO down a freeway on-ramp in LA once. He fishtailed so badly trying to make the turn at the bottom of the ramp that he slid two lanes out into the freeway! The moral of the story? Do not race GTOs down on-ramps; someone in the GTO might get hurt! :D

Dude, the guy had been tailgating me all the way down the street from the previous stop light. There was a right turn onto the ramp, at a stop light, then a sharp left, a swooping straight, and a hard right at the bottom of the ramp where they were doing construction. I took off when the light changed, ran up into third gear on the long straight portion of the ramp, then cruised through the sharp turn at the bottom. When I looked up in the mirror, about two seconds later after merging at a reasonable (to me) 75 mpg, I saw the GTO exit the ramp sliding to the left and countersteering right. Then the fool lifted off the gas, the rear tires hooked, and he fishtailed to the right, and then left again. He gained control (somehow) without hitting the poor Toyota Camry hi missed by about 2 feet, then continued down the freeway at the speed limit, thanking his stars he didn't scratch his $38,000 understeering Aussie-made super-saloon.
A GTO on stock front tires is an accident looking for a place to happen!

It was an "RX-8 friendly" on-ramp. The guy in the GTO should have known better, but I don't think he was expecting the hard right at the bottom of the ramp due to construction. It was normally a two-lane freeway ramp, and I think he expected to simply blow by me.
Didn't they list the Goat as 5.9 seconds from 0-60 on those dinky stock Goodyear tires?
