Mazda Recommends 5w-20 thats what I have been using and only had mine a few months now to. I've heard that you can use other oil, are there specific reasons why you would? When I first got it, I had the my Mazda dealership change the oil and they said every 5k, should I do it before 5k?

I mean, seriously, its your car, your money. Why can't you just do some research and see which one you wanna use ?

Oil choice is very subjective. Using the search button can help you come to terms with what oil type and weight would best suit your needs.. Do some research because your going to get 100 different recommendations man.
Also, Mazda will never know if your using dino oil or synthetic oils unless you tell them.. This is why is always good take your car to be serviced at a shop where you know the people working their to write up a invoice with the proper Mazda recommendations

You sure about that?
There was a thread here a while back by a guy who had his engine replacement warranty claim denied because of one oil change with synthetic.

Unless you TELL Mazda you are using synthetic there is no way they are going to know what kind of oil you are using (outside of testing it, which goes back to the whole not telling them thing).

I think someone needs to put together a searching 101 presentation for the noobs around here. Because this **** is getting really old!

The answer to your question (Can I use the search function?) is obviously NO.
One of the names I did get straight from the horses mouth as far as a synthetic NOT to use was Mobil 1. There was no direct reason given. This is the most highly used synthetic in the world and Mazda has apparently had issues with it in rotaries as far as carbon deposits go. That was an unofficial position from them and you will never see it listed in writing for reasons I have already explained. Most highly used and easy to obtain synthetic oil in the world and problems with it's extended use in a rotary engine.
There's also a bunch of other posts saying the same thing over and over again.

Only on gearhead car forums like this. In fact, every auto manufacturer recommends a particular oil (or range of oil viscosities) for every engine they design. In North America, Mazda recommends 5W-20, non-synthetic. Which, I'd wager, is what 98% of American RX-8 owners have happily used since day one. (Whether they bother to check it or change it regularly is another matter.)
Of course, there's nothing Mazda can do to keep you from using any oil you want. 5W-30, 10W-40, synthetic… hell, you can use Oil of Olay if you believe the engineers who designed the Renesis know less about rotary engine design and motor oil than you. I suspect if you visit any sports car forum you'll find a multitude of oil recommendations from the many thousands of armchair petrochemical engineers and engine designers out there.
Remember, this is America - and this is the internet. You don't need a fancy schmancy degree in mechanical engineering or petrochemicals to be an expert on, let's face it, what is a pretty simple subject. Everyone can be a petroleum/rotary engine expert. Even you.

yay, for the 362nd time this year....
if you have the ability to read up on why some oils burn better than others, and which oils fall into what categories. then do so. also if you can read up on rotary history as far as oil weight then you can do that as well and then make your own conclusions.
otherwise dont bother looking for answers here. you'll get as many different answers as there are people replying to your question.
but FWIW a 10W40 dino oil is the answer for most ppl. synthetics are perfectly fine, IF you are smart enough to figure out that there are a couple of synthetic manufacturers to stay away from.

I tell my dealership I use Synthetic straight up. All I know is I am using SAE oil and there is nothing they can do to deny my warranty.
A lot of dealership are loaded with morons who with their mind set in 1970s. and sad thing is people at Mazda corporate also inherited this idiomatic mindset.
The way to wake them up is --- Take their *** to court, you win.
oh, 5w20 is garbage. I said it. Mazda recommend them cuz they know most engine "degradation" happens slowly over time, so slow that most people's butt dyno will not be able to tell. Once you're out of the 100K/8yr mark, they're happy.
not saying 20w50 is the savior, at least the engine won't be out of spec at 50K miles (the wear speeds up after that point)
Mazda Japan has their own "line" of Synthetic oil for Rotary. So if Synthetic is "no no no no OMG ITS EVIL" for Rotary like some idiots said, then Mazda Japan must be smoking **** to sell their own Synthetic oil.

nycgps, you're missing the point. It doesn't matter if synthetic is fine for the engine, it doesn't matter if you're using Idemitsu Racing Rotary Oil.
If you give MNAO an excuse to deny a warranty claim and they take it, you're screwed. It doesn't matter who is right or wrong about the oil.
And if you think that taking MNAO to court will have a good outcome for you, you're out of your mind. They don't have to prove that synthetic oil is bad for the engine, they just have to show the owner's manual and that's that. If they can show that you didn't follow recommended maintenance, then they can choose to not honor the warranty, case closed.
