And even then it only records a very small amount of time (I think they only have the fix seconds leading up to a crash).

It's my understanding that they can tell long term data from a black box installed in nearly all new cars. If you're involved in a fatal accident they can tell if you habitually speed.

I read that in an online article.. i could be wrong.

I think the question is does the car have a black box ie the one that records the speed at which the car hits the .....

For several years now the airbags have a 5 second black box that records speed, acceleration etc. It retains the last 5 seconds of data before deployment.

It has recently been used in a court case in Canada to convict someone of manslaughter, racing etc. I think there is a thread on it somewhere on this board.

Edit: the ruling was released today.
