Can't see around rearview mirror

I was driving today and came to a 4-way stop. I didn't see anyone and started to go forward. At the last second, I noticed someone was also coming thru the intersection on my right. I didn't even see them because they were behind my rearview mirror! I slammed on the brakes and gave an apologetic wave, but I felt like an idiot.

Does anyone else have problems seeing to the right?

the mirror is double jointed. for some reason it comes from the factory in its lowest position. push it up out of your way and re-adjust.

Wow - thanks boys - you guys work quick!

I just went out to the garage and fixed it - what a difference!

Just sitting here waiting for the Yankees game to start so that they can move on and get hammered by the Red Sox!

You didn't know there was THAT much windshield there did ya!?

Before I figured out the mirror moved, I had installed my radar detector under it .. basically cutting out all center visibility :D

I love this forum!

I didn't know that either, and it is definitely an issue.

I had this problem with the side view mirrors. It was hard to see oncoming traffic when waiting to enter a traffic circle which I had to deal with on a daily basis. It was very frustrating and was the cause for many a harrowing moment.

It's funny how this little bit pops up every few months :D

No DYI needed. Either version of the mirror works the same. Look at the base where it joins the glass, and look at the back. Both ends of that shaft are ball joints. Just grab the mirror body firmly and pull it upwards as a whole. Enjoy the huge chunk of windshield you thought you didnt have.

Believe me this mirror is nothing compared to the one on my Z3 which took up half the window.

I have had issues with the rearview mirror blocking forward view with most of the cars I have driven in the last 10 years. I am 6'4" and I believe that sitting higher in the saddle exacerbates the problem.

My wife is now driving an Acura MDX and that car does not present much of an issue for me, but our last two cars a 5 series BMW and a 3 Series BMW both were problematic. The BMW mirrors seem larger than most and I believe they hang down lower than typical, such that they were just slightly higher than the center of my field of vision out the windshield. I got used to ducking my head to see under the mirror in the BMWs. Ducking is not an option in the RX-8 due to my seating position; I sat much more upright in the BMWs naturally. However, shortly after taking delivery of the RX-8 I realized that the mirror was double jointed and pulling it upward as far as it will go has made the mirror much less obtrusive, so much so that I believe that the RV mirror is less a problem in the RX-8 than either of my BMWs. This position does not seem to have any adverse effects on the vision out the rear of the car.

The side view mirrors are a whole other kettle of fish. I don't know if it is the location of the mirrors on the door or the small size, but I can't recall driving a car with such limited vision with the side view mirrors. In order to see cars directly to the side of my car, I have had to adjust the mirrors at a very extreme angle such that the view to the rear of the car is eliminated. I guess that is why they are called side view mirrors. I have always been able to see cars to the side of my vehicle as well as behind my vehicle via the side view mirrors. That is not the case with the RX-8. Not really a big issue, just something that took a little time to get used to.

Ti Driver, That's kinda funny that you mention the side mirrors being so small. I traded in my E36 M3 on my RX-8 and its' side mirrors were even smaller. I felt like I could see more out of my new mirrors. I miss the hp though. FI next summer should fix that... :D

Even worse Raz, You aparently missed my mirror was moved way up at the Orlando meet :D

And this is like the third time I've posted about it too!

ti: I had to laugh. You described setting up you mirror so you dont see the *** of the car to be able to see to the sides. Congratulations! You've accidentally setup your mirrors the right way!
