I'm curious at the responses... I wasn't referring to 'holding' a car on a hill.

A hill start. You get in your car, turn it on and have to drive up a hill. I had to do this as part of my driving test and learnt how to do this from a qualified instructor.

How did your driving instructors teach you to do hill starts?

I've been driving a manual over 13yrs, many of which in sports cars. The RX8 is not my first sports car and certainly not my first manual.

^^I just rev it up and take off. On my driving test I drove an auto. Parents taught me the manual tranny. They never showed me the e-brake method. Seems like a good idea tho.

My driving instructor didn't teach me since the car was an auto. I taught myself. The e-brake trick seemed like a kludge so I figured out what the correct amount of gas and clutch and got good at doing it quickly.

Really, once you figure out the start of the friction zone, it's just a matter of getting there, letting off the brake pedal and then modulating throttle and clutch appropriately.

My driving instructor told me to put the car and drive and then press the gas pedal.

Driving schools don't really teach MT much anymore, just basic rules of the road.

That's a shame... in England you can't drive a MT legally on the road unless you have taken your test in one.

Steep hills

I would use the E-Brake if in traffic on a steep hill at a stop light/sign if there is an idiot in an automatic behind me who has crawled up to within a foot of my car otherwise it really isn't necessary after you have learned to drive MT.
