Can't work, can't sleep, can't think ... 2004 or 2005?
... about anything else.
I will graduate from law school (no lawyer jokes - unless they are fresh ones! ;-)and start new job in 8 weeks ... reward to myself = new car. Last weeknd I sat in (have not even driven yet) my first RX-8 and then looked up this forum ... I've been reading for about two days now! Great site!
If this car drives ANYTHINK like what is described here, I don't think anything will stop me from buying. I've looked at RSX's (less $$), 350Z's (more $$) and a few others ... but, for total package, the RX-8 seems take the prize IMO.
My dad had an RX-7 in the mid-90's and I put many km's on it myself - since then I've had a Z3 and a New-beetle - both fun cars, but come on ... not even close to my (limited) RX-7 experience. Sounds like the RX-8 may even trump that!
Anyone willing to try to talk me out of it?

I did the same type of thing you did when I graduated last November. I did a LOT of research on the 8, G35, 350Z, RSX, TSX, and even the Acura TL. When all was said and done, I chose the 8 and I have never been happier. Its not a common car, at least in Atlanta, so its nice to turn a few heads everytime I drive it. My only real issue with the car is the cold start problem(which I have yet to experience) and the gas mileage, but at this point in my life, this car is worth every penny. I am in consulting and I only get to drive my car probably 3-4 times a week, so I dont eat that much gas and because this is essentially my night/weekend car, it makes driving it all the more fun. Good luck shopping

Any reason why I should stick to 2005?
I'd like to find a 2004 w/ low kms to avoid some depreciation ... but going brand new would be nice too.
Any reasons why going 2005 would be a better choice? (No matter what I'm going for the 6-speed model, in either year).

hey Ransak, welcome and good luck in your purchasing decision!
2005 = new colour (white) and new key
If you can find a 2005 for the same price as a 2004, then take it. If not, there's not much reason to get one unless you have your heart set on white or a fancy flip-out key.
And get off yer *** and go test drive that **** already!!! :D

Check the buying subforum.
You can get great deals on NEW 2004 models, with rebates. No need to get a used one, even with low miles. I got a 2004 gt with navigation a week and a half ago. You'll also be able to get a $500 recent graduate rebate.

Your post was a breath of fresh air after the puerile posts of a few other new members. So I say, "Welcome to all lawyers!" At least you type in complete sentences and think in coherent paragraphs. :D
You might want to reconsider "Ransak" though. That evokes Attila and, well, court-appointed bankruptcy agents! Dewey, Ransak and Howe?

Thanks! Great site - I'll likely be around for a while!
Can't change "Ransak" though ... it's a purely senseless moniker that I've been stuck with for nearly 30 years! Funny, some 6 year-old friend, who I can barely remember, came up with it - probably just a sound to him, rather than any sort of work with meaning - but it stuck like glue.

So far as I can tell - there is little/no difference in HP between teh 2004/2005 6-sp MT versions ... is that correct.
(It's a little hard to tell for sure b/c of the HP controversy and different figures that I find all over the place) ...
Thanks in advance for help/feedback.

i was looking at some RSX's myself before i went over to mazda. the RSX is an awesome car with a sweet engine, but for overall ride, comfort, and interior there is no comparision. IMO for less than 37k no car can touch the rx-8, not to mention it starts at 25.5
