Car and Driver - RX8 WINS!!!!!
#27
i recently drove a 350Z and was very UN-impressed. cheapy interior, not all that fast...and the motor felt rough as it revved.... and the engine noise frominside the car sounded lame. i always thought the Zs and Gs sounded cool as I would hear them from the outside...but now having a change to drive one..the sound inside stinks.
the RX8 is a much more fun car to drive. sounds better too.
if i had to buy an 8 or a Z....i'd take the RX8.
a mustang.. ha. what a POS. i am so SICK of all the retro crap.
if mazda would just boost thepower of the 8 they wouuld have such a kick A$$ car. the reason i doubt they will do it just yet is that the mazda philosophy has always been to build fun to drive cars that wren't too expensive. i had an Rx8 back in high school..and older first gen...those cars were great. back then i test drove a 280ZX...which was faster...but once again, it felt cheapy and crappy. the RX7 was more fun, more of a pure sports car, and the Z felt like a wanna be Camaro/Vette. didn't like it. the miata was a raging success - small, cheap, fun to drive. the RX7 started out that way, and as it morphed into a high $$$$ high perofrmance hardcore performer, sales dropped.
peoplewho are going to spend 50k+ are going to buy a more name brand car. boxsters, used 911s, Vettes.... in the high 20s, low 30s the RX is competitive.
if Mazda could keep the price the same, but more about 50-100 more hp....they'd have a car that would sell like hotcakes.
anyway..back to the topic at hand... given that i've been wanting to get an RX8..and given that you don't see much about them in the car mags, press, etc.... it was nice to see it on the cover, then flip to the article and see it WIN.

Having driven lots of cars including the ones on the CD test, I chose the RX8, with no regrets.
Better yet for Mazda, I ended up buying a CX7, and my wife a Mazda5 as a result. My daughter will be getting a Mazda3 next year, although we'll buy it used.
My wife traded out of an Altima for the 5. She considered a 2006 CRV (too much like a Jeep) and a BMW 3 series (too much money for what you get). The 5 is a tad underpowered but she loves it. Drives like a sports car, it's hard to believe until you drive it.
I was considering a Z car and a Murano.
Mazda builds a better product for the money in my opinion.

1) The Mustang has a nice engine, but the RX's is so much more fun to drive. 9000 RPM and no vibration... ridiculous.
2) The Mustang has one of the cheesiest interiors I've ever seen in a factory car. Seriously, WTF was Ford thinking? They have a gorgeous exterior on that car and then totally choke on the interior. Even a sixteen year old would think that.
3) I know this isn't a big deal to some people, but the back seat of the Mustang is completely pointless. You might as well remove it and then not even pretend that someone can actually sit back there.
4) Handling, handling, handling. The Mustang is fun in a straight line, and is better than you would think in a turn, but it's no match for the RX.
The Z is a great car; one of my best friends owned one and absolutely loved it. But, he had to sell it when he had his first kid; if he owned an RX he never would have needed to do that.

i must say i'm rather surprised hearing this from C&D. Although it was high time to move out of the top 10 ranks, I'd actually thought that they almost signed off on anything RX-8 until the 2nd gen comes about.
At any rate, i sure hope this issue makes it to my house! I've a suspicion that since january a few R&T here and there as well as a few C&D here and there arn't just a coincidence...
Go gettum 8

Seems like all these cars are pretty good, it's a matter of personal preference.
-C&D likes the RX8 best.
-Edmunds picked Mustang first, then RX8, then 350z.
-Road and Track didn't even put the RX8 in 12 best under $30k, while the 350z and Mustang were in there.
