Car and Driver - RX8 WINS!!!!!
#52
Basically RX8 won outta pity. i still until this day think we need more power. at least release the GOD DAMN speed already. 300hp is not that hard to squeeze out. even a scion has a supercharger.

Unless I'm mistaken, the RX-8 is still undefeated in the big 3 US car mags.
C&D '07 Test: Mustang Shelby, 350Z, Audi TT, RX-8 (winner)
R&T '04 Test: G35 vs. RX-8 (winner)
MT '04 Test: S2000, 350Z, RX-8 (winner)
C&D '03 Test: Mustang GT, G35, RX-8 (winner)
But it's just a matter of time before it loses one of these shoot outs. The new G37 or next gen Z car will probably be the ones to do it. That is, until the next gen RX car leap frogs them again.

Nice. Cant wait to read the article.
I wonder how many letters from Mustang/350z owners are going to be pulished next month complaining and threatening to cancel their subscriptions?

If everyone is misinformed about the car they own vs. comparable cars, who then, is right.....only EVO owners?
I just read that short thread on zcar and would agree that they're misinformed; anyone who argues that their car is a "sports car" simply because of torque is the true idiot. For what it's worth, the 350Z makes significantly more torque than a Formula 1 car. Does that make it better?

why do CD ask for 100 more hp? thats not the spirit of mazda. we dont make drag cars. we make fun to drive cars, theres a difference....
100 more hp ANd better fuel economy? pretty soon ull be asking for better handling AND a softer ride! the two dont mix ppl.
the renesis will neevr be turbo'd. the chance of ppl screwin it up quadruples when u put turbod rotary engines in the hands of inexperienced tuners/customers. reliability goes to hell bc ppl dont kno how to treat/maintain those cars. i wanted mazda dealers to give a rotary test to each customer b4 they bought an rx8 and if they passed then they could buy one.....fyi, that actually made it up the tree a litttle bit before the idea was shot down....
the enxt rx8 will be these things....
somewhat aggressive fresh styling
-retain 4 door, 4 seater ( as this will be signature rx8)
-retain huge fender flares (as this is the new look of mazda)
-direct injected
-slightly better fuel economy (remember the EPA is changing the way they measure MPG soon so itll show a more REALISTIC value...which is death to the current multi port 13B.)
-bump in hp, maybe 30, ....40 is pushin it
thats all it needs, thats plenty enuff for me to buy one too!
you guys need to be realistic when it comes to designing cars. i constantly beg the chassis engineers to make a hardcore R1 package for the rx8 with race tires and race suspension but itll probably happen. its about being practical. sure, they could sell an R1 rx8, but it would please 20 ppl and only about 5 of them would actually buy it, the old men who test drive these cars for car mags would bitch about the ride and the bad grip in the wet and then bash it in the magazines....so itd "flop". its the same reason the speed3 is FWD. sure, they could have made an AWD speed3, but it would have costed so much more, itd be a waste of time and energy when itd cost so little to have it FWD.
for a lot of money they could design a decent awd comparo against an evo, or they could spend way less and be the best fwd car ever made......
lets all be realistic in the demands we have for car companies....they have a lot on their plate....

TT vs RX 8
I had a 1.8 T Audi TT for two years...FWD. It was cramped, had no backseat to speak of unless you're under 8 years old. It was not as good handling, the seats not as comfortable because leather lets you slide and the lateral support was not as good . My right knee constantly hit the brace , the window was high and you could not put your arm up...there was no armrest and the cupholder impossible to use.The Turbo lag drove me crazy everytime I tried to get into traffic to the point that it scared me. The mileage was minimally better...maybe 19 with 23 on the road...It was not as cool looking as the 8 or even as the new TT which is a monstor but costs $46,000 with the good stuff. I had an '87 RX 7 for 12 years with 125k on it and seriously enjoyed the 7 and now the 8 as much more fun...not as big a status symbol but to me much more unique. Every TT was silver it seemed...I love my RED 8. I've had Camaros, Audi A4, Acura CL and I have more fun in this car than any but this is a true sports car. You cannot just drive it , you must take care of it and drive it correctly. Lots of things to think about...not the no brainer of some point and aim cars today.

P.S. That's a rhetorical question...

332 hp in a 3000 lb car? enjoy tryin to keep that thing straight. and enjoy that gas mileage, think u guys bitch enuff about mpg now? lets go have mazda kick out turbo rx8s makin nearly 350 hp.....yeah....go on guys, say somethin stupid
id rather have 232 hp in an rx8 that went on a very serious diet. think, lotus elise, insanely light, awesome mpg, scary fast, and 40 less hp than us no less! what do u need a turbo for if the 8 weighed 2500 lbs? itd be better in all areas of performance AND better on gas. thro DI in the mix and itd be untouchable. from a money standpoint, theres no reason to turbo the renesis .
elise killer, yes please!

I'm speechless .... never thought Ike would say this.... I've always enjoyed his comments and humor ... perhaps we should post this in the lounge for more to see?

Consider this...more power doesn't always mean more fun.
Daily I thrash the 8, often going WOT for a good 6-10 seconds. How fast do I end up going? Usually 80-90 mph max...not too fast for my fav. deserted roads, or my license for that matter. The satisfying part of a car, or being an enthusiast, is pushing your car. Feeling the engine at full throttle, the car squirm, the redline shifts, the positive shift engagement, etc. Kinda like my old Miata, which was slower than anything but fun most of the time.
Now if I do the same with my litrebike, simply WOT for a good 6-10 seconds, I'm over 150mph before you know it. I can't really access that on the street, therefore the fun is often lost.
And fun is what being an enthusiast is all about, no?

I can really agree with your point .... Even with the RX'8 lack of hp ... its pretty damn easy to look down at the speedo and say ..... ohhh crap ... I dunno if I wanna go that fast through here!!!
The car simply drives as fast as you want it to without effort. Soon the question becomes (I remember this quote from an old racing beat catalog) -- "How fast do you want to go??"
