I was just going to post...
Most expensive models to insure
1 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6 Lexus IS 300
2 Mercedes CL-Class 7 Honda S2000
3 Dodge SRT-4 8 Acura RSX
4 Subaru Impreza WRX 9 Nissan 350Z
5 Jaguar XK (convertible) 10 Jaguar XJ
Is anyone surprised that the inexpensive SRT-4 is on the list. Interesting that the 8 isn't in this list yet is just about everything else in our class...

Gotta look at a few demographics....
Who buys the Evo, WRX, and SRT-4, S2000 and RSX? Younger buyers looking to hot-rod and street race... These demographics always drive the insurance rates up on a particular vehicle. Lots of expensive accidents in the young street-racer crowd. Nothing like a few multi-hundred-thousand dollar medical claims to drive the rates up.
One of the cars on the list, the 350Z, is there because it is a high-performance 2-seat sports car that crosses the demographic line (ours has 4 seats and 4 doors, and so is considered a touring car instead of a sports car by some insurers )
And some are there because they are expensive targets for thieves, and expensive to repair (Jaguar, Mercedes). I had always thought that the most expensive car to insure in the US was the Mercedes SL65AMG? Maybe the CL65AMG surpassed it.
Two on the list are surprising: The Lexus IS300 and the Jaguar XJ. Hm.

the rx8 is the cheapest car I insure.. 800 yr. vs 2100 yr for my 2001 civic hx and 1200 yr for the 2000 dodge dakota. i've since sold the civic and the truck.
but my 64 bug with collectors insurance is only 37/yr for full stated value coverage.

1,3,4,8 are due to idiot drivers
2,5,6,7,9,10 are due to theft (with some being helped along by idiot drivers)
The major demographic for SRT-4 ownership is 16-22 years of age. Immaturity combined with inexperience = lots of accidents.
The 8 shares pretty much no parts with other cars, making it low on the list of cars to steal. It is generally owned by older drivers. It has low displacement, 4 doors, and high safety ratings. The only thing not going for it insurance-wise is the price of parts for replacement.

I just got my 2004 RX-8, sold a 2003 350Z and my insurance is 236 dollars more a year than it was with my Z. I have a 100% clean record and it blew me away that the 8 was more. I should take this article to my insurance agent and see why.

Erm I pay on Avg $350 a month.. and around 3.5k a year. I've only driven for 3 years though and I live in MA which has horrible insurance period. Strange thing was I drive a 04 Rx-8 and I was planning on buying a 3 orginally the only difference was about $500 between the two.. the 3 being the cheapest. I figured for a extra $500 a year driving the type of vechile I've always wanted was worth it. So far it has

The Evo is so high for several reason. The speed and stupid things people with do with them being a big one. They also have the second highest rate of theft claims, and those claims are rather expensive as are the accident claims Wheels, seats, brakes, are all VERY expensive. Their resale value is about the best in the industry which means when someone totals one the inurance company is paying out bigtime.
There is no way in hell I could afford this car if I wasn't over 30 and didn't have a clean record. I pay less than $100 a month but I've seen guys that pay $500+ a month I have no clue how young guys are able to afford Evos... Though of all the Evo owners I know only one is under 25 and several are older than me.

This table is from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The table shows relative insurance losses for injuries, vehicle damage, and theft from 2002-2004. The average on the scale is 100. http://www.iihs.org/brochures/ictl/ictl.html
The RX-8 is only slightly above average for injury (107) while the Lancer is 213. The Mercedes CL is only 53 for injury, but a whopping 305 for collision. The SRT-4 is 237 for injury and 287 for collision.
As you can see below, the RX-8 is on the higher end of the scale compared to other midsize sports cars, mainly due to collision (176).

I wonder why they think the Boxster is "small" and the 8 isn't? I parked next to one yesterday at physical therapy and it looked just as big if not bigger by looking at them next to each other. Maybe because it only has two seats?

I pay $1500 a year on my insurance. I'm 25, have had my license for eight months (been driving since I was 18). I have $100/$250 deductible, gap insurance, and the highest offered levels of coverage for injury-relateds and property damage. I pretty much have maximum coverage for all categories offered. I looked at having higher deductibles to see if that would lower my rate. The highest the loan would allow me to have would be $500 and that only mad my insurance lower by $40 a year, so it wasn't the slightest bit worth it.
Keep in mind, some of you that are a little "unhappy" with your higher rates compared to other people on here, they probably have less coverage than you and/or higher deductibles. It's all relative. If I got the minimum requirements I had to have for my loan it would cost me $950 a year. This basically was only coverage of the vehicle itself and nothing for injuries or anything else. If I took out the minimum level of insurance required by the state (liability) it would only be in the $400 range but I don't remember what.

well the lower payments make up for all the gas and oil the Rx8 eat. When I was car shopping this was the cheapest from the rest. I pay $145 a month, 24 years old, full coverage and I live in Seattle, WA.

I have close to maximum coverage and pay about $2,000 a year. This is in the great state of California. I'm also 22, have been driving for 6 years, and have three tickets on my record (all from the wonderful state of New York).

Both of my other cars (2000 eclipse GT, 2002 Sentra SE-R SpecV) cost me more than the 8 and they both have a $1000 deductable.

the and 8 has the lowest rating (20)out the those 2 cars, the 350z has 3 different ratings (26, 27, 28) and the s2k has one (26). now those numbers work the lower the number the lower the ins is. Now im not saying you are lying, but you should see your agent and have him compare both models . and also that agent might have added some more coverages taht you may have forgot or lowered your deductibles which will raise your prem. either way, the 8 will not cost more then the z
