Carbon Build up
Wanted to get your guys opinion on this, sounds like the dealer is trying to bamboozle me again. I took my car in for the horrible vibration and for the weird dripping noise that is really lound that I get on the right side of my dash when it rains yet ther eis no water in there. Anyways, he said they noticed alot of carbon build up on the parts that werent swapped out from my remanufactured engine I got about 9 months ago. Said it would be around $120 or $130 to clean. I asked him about the Service Notice that I thought it was done once under the recall or the Service Bullitin or something. He said no, and then I thought well, how did you notice this after I have had my car in the shop atleast 6 times in the last year.
I have a feeling they are trying to get me to pay for something that istn really needed, anyone else run into this? Or know if this should be covered under the waranty?

What is your driving style? If you hardly ever redline, then a decarb may be needed. I would take on a backroad and drive the **** out of it and burn some of that **** out of the engine.

Well I dont know what the previous owner did, but since I have had it I try to redline atleast once a day, if not atleast every few days. Would Redlining it alot on a single drive really help do that?

It's common belief that redlining helps to remove or even prevent some Carbon Buildup. There are some people who don't think it works. How much you should redline, well, that's up to you. I have a tendency to do it at least 3 times a day. It's fun, and I believe it's healthy!

If you want to save money and still do the decarb, you can buy the stuff and do it yourself at a fraction of the cost. NYGPS has a good DIY about that. I think the engine cleaner costs like 30 bucks.
My gut would be to do it yourself. I've seen some very nasty looking photos of intakes and ports, and it's entirely possible that they're gunked up again if you've had the engine replaced for a carbon related issues in the past.
Have they checked your motor mounts yet? seems to me like thats a more likely place to find a severe vibration.

Theres a point of no return I'm sure, but it can clean out accumulated gunk if someone hasn't been keeping the engine up in the high rev ranges enough.

A can of seafoam is like $8. And yes it does make a difference.

If u're under bumper to bumper warranty, it should be free. I know my dealership did it to my car, twice within 5 months. (last month and april)

My advice, FWIW: decarb your engine yourself with Seafoam. The cost with vacuum hose is less than $10. Go through the procedure once and you'll be able to do it in 5-10 minutes in the future. Then go back and have them check the engine mounts AGAIN.

a cheaper way to clean out your engine is to drive it around in high revs when it's really foggy out.
You depend on the weather for it to happen, but if it's very thick then just go out and run at 5k rpms in 1st gear, there is little better for cleaning out carbon than just plain water.
I'd do the seafoam myself, altho for some reason I've never been able to get the car to smoke really bad when I've used it, and this has been on 3 cars so far.

Yes, they said it looks like the motor mounts were loose when they installed the reman engine. I will take a look at the DIY, thanks for the heads up. I will also try redlining more often. I already do it about once a day, I will try and do it twice a day to work and back, to stay on top. Thanks for the info, everyone.

Grabbed some Seafoam and am going to try it this weekend. I have been redlining it about 3 times a day since Saturday. They fixed my engine mounts and the vibration is gone thankfully. Thanks for the tips. I will try the DIY and see how it works.

With that said, I am also getting what sounds like some water flowing through pipes behind the dash in front of the passenger seat. How would I go about "bleeding/burping it out"? Or is this something normal that I should not worry about?
Also, my car sometimes idles a little roughly, usually at about 8-900 rpm's. If I give it a little gas to bump it up to the mid 1k rpm range, it smooths out completely, but the rough idle is both annoying and disconcerting. Is this problem a candidate for seafoam?
